Newport: Isner Eases Through The QFs
Isner reaches final eight term in Newport
Top seed John Isner has guaranteed a quarter final berth after easing past Arnaud Clement 7-6, 6-4 past whom he hit 11 aces in the second term of the American tournament. Next up for the host is compatriot Alex Bogomolov who overcame Rubens Bemelmans in three sets.
The French managed to push the opener into a tie-break which the crowd favorite won at the death, at six after the two exchanged a couple of breaks. As for the second set, it saw the American break Clement and hit six aces compared to his opponent’s two, to clinch the victory in nearly one hour and a half. Isner finished the game with four double faults and with a 69 percent of first service success, while Clement committed nine double faults, and had a 50-percent of first serve success.
The head to head series between the two have now gone 2-0 to the world number 46 who had previously beaten the unseeded French at the New Zealand Open last year. He will next meet conational Bogomolov who follows a hard-fought win grabbed against Rubens Bemelmans whom he ousted 2-6, 6-0, 6-1. Alex will meet Isner for the second time, the head to head series being led by the 26-year-old whose only win dates from this term’s Miami Masters event.
On the second half of the draw, Denis Kudla has continued his remarkable performance with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over second favorite Grigor Dimitrov whom the American ousted in nearly one hour. He will next face another American, Michael Yani, who has reached the quarter finals thanks to Tommy Haas’s abandon at 2-5 down. Kudla finished the game with four aces, four breaks and a double fault, and a poor 48 first serve percentage compared to Bulgarian’s one break and a 67 first serve percentage.
Olivier Rochus has grabbed a much easier win than in the first round when the Belgian ousted Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 7-6 to set a Matthew Ebden meeting. The Aussie edged Matthias Bachinger 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 and will meet Rochus for the first time. The Belgian conceded seven aces from Mahut, but that didn’t scare him too much as he answered with three break-point conversions of four tries, including a 56 first serve percentage compared to the French who finished the meeting with 55 first serve percentage plus six double faults a poor break-point performance which saw Mahut create himself 18 chances and convert just a couple of them.
Said Rochus: “It was very hard and the conditions were tough; it was pretty warm out there. He reached the final here and almost won Queen’s a few years ago… To beat a guy like Nicolas on grass is a very good win. To be in the quarter-finals again is fantastic. I’m really enjoying here. I hope it can keep going this way.”
Finally, Edouard Roger Vasselin and Tobias Kamke are the last to fight for a semi final spot. The French eliminated Jimmy Wang of Taipei in two sets, 7-5, 6-4, while his next opponent grabbed almost a similar win against Donald Young of United States whom he ousted 7-6, 6-4. Vasselin broke his opponent five times out of 14 tries, finishing the game with a 66 first serve percentage and a 61 percentage of service points won compared to Wang’s 57 first service point percentage and a 51 percentage of service points.
Concerning his next opponent, Kamke, who won the breaker at three, hit two aces past Young, finishing the game with a 61 percentage of service points won and four breaks. Young broke the German three times, but never managed to level the situation. Kamke is now expected to play his first quarter final of the season.
