Yesterday, a four passenger plane, that took flight just outside Watsonville, crashed into Watsonville Community Hospital yesterday at about 7:30 P M.
The accident claimed two lives according to Mark Bisbee (firechief). One of the witnesses said that he had seen the plane take and also that the pilot was trying to adjust his equipment in midair.
Benson, also a Watsonville pilot, was in the industrial park when the accident happened. Since the park is near the Watsonville Municipal Airport, he was able to see the entire thing. He said that the single engine light aircraft was a four seater. Benson explained that for some reason, the plane was going too steep and too slow. Pilot spun the plane to the left, as it can be seen from the impact. Standing in the parking lot, the tail of the plane can be clearly seen sticking out of the building, while debris are spread all across the parking lot. Benson also said that the pilot had no time for any recovery attempts. How come?
Fog is usually present in South County during summer nights, therefore the National Weather Service, confirmed that there was the usual bay fog dropping over the area on Thursday night.
Don French, airport manager, stated that there were no special or dangerous conditions to be aware of. It was a simple Central Coast fog. French also said that he was unable to identify the passengers, yet he can guarantee that the plane was local.
According to the information given by the tail number, the plane belongs to David Houghton, who works as a principal at an environmental science and engineering company: A Plus Environmental Solutions. The company is located in Santa Cruz. If he was on board or not, it has not been established.
The plane heading south as it descended from the sky, collided with the hospital’s administrative offices, the first building of the hospital complex. Officials state that, luckily, there weren’t any people around at the time.
Thomas Arnold, 34 years old, was by his car, in the parking lot when he saw the plane. He said that all he saw were a couple of faces inside the plane. He also said that the plane made contact with the pavement just a couple of meters from his car. How lucky is he? Then the plane ripped the asphalt as it was heading for the building. At impact, the plane exploded and flames caught everywhere.
The firefighters arrived in a matter of minutes and contained the fire.
