Jared Loughner fired a weapon in a crowd of people in Tuckson. Gun Control advocates demand some changes in the policies which allowed Loughner to purchase a semi-automatic weapon without having a permit.
The event left six people dead and several other wounded including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Gun control activists had do suppress their disappointed when president Obama addressed the issue during the speech that he gave in Tucson, four days later to the incident.
It was indeed a memorial service and not a political event. Paul Helmke, leader of the Brady Campaign was deeply frustrated. He stated that the president was talking about the congresswoman, mentioning the families and “the dreams of a little girl”, yet five paragraphs later he was deep in a topic regarding the stock market. Helmke also stated that the speech was so blank, that if someone hadn’t heard the news before, they might think that the Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords would have been “abducted by aliens”.
Pressure increased on the White House to take action regarding guns.
President Obama used the classic turn of phrase to encourage Americans to “get beyond wedge issues” so that they can find an intelligent way to make “USA a safer and stronger place”. How does that sound from the outside?
A conglomerate of city mayors that formed a group called Mayors Against Illegal Guns sent a letter today to the president in which they stated that they trust the people conducting these actions, but they are disappointed that 6 months have passed, yet still no motion, no change in policy as been made. Mark Glaze states that there weren’t any congressional hearings related to Tucson or guns whatsoever.
Glaze also says that the president could take a couple of important steps without necessarily waiting for the Congress. If the president would act fast, it might make a big difference.
For example, military and federal agencies were supposed to file reports on people with mental problems, drug or alcohol abuse and so on, yet few do it thoroughly. This is one of the things the president could change, gun control advocates say. Who wouldn’t want harsher conditions for gun purchasing?
The only reason, in mind of the anti-guns advocates, that is preventing president Obama from taking action, is that campaigns will start soon and president Obama will need every vote he can get.
