Romania’s Irina Begu has secured a final berth at the $220,000 Hungarian event after easing past favorite Anabel Medina of Spain 6-4, 6-4 in the final four round to meet this term’s Hertogenbosch champion Roberta Vinci who has also guaranteed a final place thanks to a similar win over Klara Zakopalova.
Begu is nearing her first ever title, the final in Budapest being her second of the season after the Marbella one. At that time, the Romanian lost to favorite Victoria Azarenka, while tomorrow’s match against the Italian will also bring their first ever meeting. Begu played the semi final more aggressive than the fifth seed Medina who allowed the youngster break her when counted the most. Begu had previously crashed another Spaniard Estrella Cabeza 6-0, 6-3. Her first round have brought her a 6-4, 6-4 win over another Spanish player, Laura Pous whom she defeated 6-4, 6-4, and a second straight similar win over Aijla Tomljanovic of Croatia.
On the other side, Medina was following an easy progress thanks to second seed Sara Errani’s abandon. Medina had been leading her 4-6, 7-5, 3-0, but failed to make the final in Budapest. She had previously ousted Anastasia Pivovarova 6-3, 6-1 and Lesia Tsurenko 6-2, 7-5 in the second term. Anyway, Begu will meet Vinci for the first time ever, the Italian being expected to start the game as main favorite, given her two titles won in Barcelona and Holland.
Concerning the fist half of the table, top seed Vinci upset Zakopalova in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. The world number 25 needed just one hour and ten minutes to get rid of the third favorite Czech who was following an easy win against Kateryna Bondarenko. Vinci had previously edged Zuzana Kucova 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 as the Italian could have been stunned by the unseeded Slovak who had match point in the breaker.
En route to the final, Vinci has defeated Lenka Jurikova 6-1, 6-0 and Timea Babos 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, having proved her favorite state in Hungary. “It was hot, just like yesterday, and it’s not easy to play in such heat. Also, I’m a bit tired as I’ve played a lot of matches recently. But today I was able to play aggressively with my forehand. She played better towards the end of the first set, but several errors, too,” said the Italian who, alongside Begu, has secured a $19,000 check and 200 points WTA.
