"Landep News"
Malaysian authorities have cracked down on protesters in the biggest pro-democratic rally organized in years in this country, that brought together 20,000 people in the capital of the country, Kuala Lumpur, demanding electoral correctness.
Police announced that 644 people were detained during the protest, as tear gas was fired on them. The police calls this operation Operation Erase Bersih, with reference to the coalition of 64 non-government organizations gathered under the name Bersih, “clean.”
Among those who were arrested senior opposition officials were reported. Police reminded people not to get involved in this kind of actions, whom they labeled earlier in the week as “waging war against the King.” They threatened to take serious action against “those who disobey.”
Parts of the capital were sealed off by the police, and many restaurants and stores were closed because of the disruption caused to traffic. Riot police were fully geared up, and used batons against demonstrators.
The government has declared the demonstration illegal, and the police has gone to great lengths to contain the situation by closing train stations, and dispatching water canons near the Independence Stadium.
Even so, thousands marched toward the stadium with yellow T-shirts and flowers, chanting “Love live the people.”
The rally today is caused by the accusation of the opposition that the electoral commission was biased and supported the coalition which had been in power ceaselessly since 1957, when the country won independence.
