Oprandi impresses further in Hertogenbosch
After she had ousted top seed Kim Clijsters in the second term, Romina Oprandi has impressed with another win in when she defeated Kimiko Date Krumm in straight sets 7-6, 6-4 in the quarter finals to face Jelena Dokic in the semi finals.
Despite a very tight first set which saw the Italian being pushed into the tie-break, the world number 82 eased past the 59th-ranked Aussie 7-3 in the breaker and had even a much easier life in the second one. The 25-year-old managed to build a two-game lead she wouldn’t let go of until the end. A precious early break allowed her to make the progress and near her biggest performance of the season which might bring her the first title of career.
Oprandi had previously defeated Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan in the opener and Kim Clijsters in the second round. The world number two has injured her foot and I slikely to skip the Wimbledon Grand Slam because of it. “At this moment I feel frustrated. The Aussie had previously defeated Flavia Pennetta whom she beat 6-3, 6-4 in the second term. The opening round brought Dokic a much easier win, eliminating Alla Kudryavtseva 6-0, 6-4.
Concerning the second half of the draw, Svetlana Kuznetsova has made a hard progress after overcoming Sara Errani 3-6, 7-6, 6-1. The Russian will next meet Dominika Cibulkova who eased past Kristina Barrois of Germany 6-0, 6-1. The head to head series between the two have gone 3-3 with the last three victories belonging to the world number 23 Slovak who has defeated the 12th-ranked at this year’s Madrid Masters. Kuznetsova won the first three meetings, her last win dating from the 2008 Beijing event.
The Russian had previously defeated Arantxa Rus of Holland, while Cibulkova had eliminated Romania’s Simona Halep in the first term. Finally, Roberta Vinci and Yanina Wickmayer are the last to fight for a semi final berth. The Italian crashed Romania’s Alexandra Dulgheru 6-2, 6-1, while her next opponent edged Arantxa Parra 7-6, 6-7, 7-5 in the second round.
The head to head series between the two is led by the world number 19 Belgian 2-0 who has last defeted the 30th-ranked Vinci at the 2010 Indian Wells Masters. The next clash will also be their second on the grass after the 2009 Birmingham meeting.
