Muammar al Qaddafi has threatened to take the conflict that is going now in Libya to Europe as rebels came under intense fire while pushing to enter the capital of the state, Tripoli.
Thousands have gathered in the Green Square of Tripoli for Friday prayers, showing their support to Qaddafi and to his refusal to step down after more than forty years of rule.
Many supporters went out into the desert town of Sabha, some 800 km to the south of the capital, in an attempt to show that the leader still has the support of the people in the regions he still controls.
Qaddafi spoke on national television, by means of a recorded audio message, threatening that hundred of Libyans will go to Europe and execute terrorist attacks in retaliation for the action of NATO against Libya.
He said that they would martyr in Europe, adding however that a time would be given them [the Europeans] to come to their senses.
During the prayer on Friday, a famous religious preacher said that the Libyan people can implement changes without Western interference.
He asked the rhetorical question how could Libyan rebels allow the West to interfere in their country’s affairs after what happened in “beloved Iraq and Afghanistan.”
European authorities don’t seem to take Qaddafi’s threats too seriously, deeming them more of “writing on the wall” for the regime of the most famous colonel of the day.
It is believed that the regime is slowly cracking as the pressure on it intensifies. Turkey seems to have delivered the final blow to the regime by freezing on Friday a $1 billion of the Libyan central bank’s deposits in the Turkish banking system.
