Betty Ford would use the White House as a stage so that she can share her happiness, her concerns or thoughts with the entire nation in a way worthy of Eleanor Roosevelt.
Ms. Ford passed away yesterday at the respectable age of 93. She used to talk openly and honestly about her worries concerning her children in full adolescence, about the strong influence sex and drugs provide. When she discovered she had breast cancer, she used “herself” to encourage and promote mammograms. She turned her addiction to pain killers into the Betty Ford recovery center, which is one of the largest recovery centers for alcoholics and drug abusers in the country.
Her open minded and spoken concerns brought comfort to many Americans. This made her a lot more popular than even your husband. In 1976 when campaigned, President Ford, in praise to his wife, wrote on campaign buttons “Betty’s husband for President”. How lovely is that?
Before setting foot in the White House, Ms Ford was an active supporter of women’s rights. She stated once that she does not enter the White House as “First Lady” but as “American citizen”.
Marshall McLuhan gave an interview to the New York Times in 1974 in which he stated that Betty Ford had that talent of making people feel good, or making them feel they belonged. It was an innate talent for a true “people person”.
Betty Ford was born and raised in Grand Rapids as Elizabeth Ann Bloomer. She was the daughter of a salesman. One of her great passions was dancing, which she studied since grade school. Later on, during a part time job as a fashion model, she discovered the desire for fashion. In 1941 she came back home and became Herpolscheimer’s newest fashion director.
After a failed marriage, she tried her luck again with Gerald Ford. At that time Mr. Ford was getting ready to run for the first time for Congress. After he won, they relocated to Washington. And from there, started a long career alongside a politician that would become president.
In 1974 she discovered that she had breast cancer. She aired all the details regarding her disease (breaking all the rules of medical privacy) and got in return over 55000 “get well” cards. Can you believe it? After being part of a treatment program, she described her fears, her ordeal and praised the people that helped her heal.
She lived a long full life and will be remembered as one of the grandest First Ladies America has ever seen.
