Boston took advantage of Yanks’ two-loss fall to go back top in the East as Red Sox eased past Baltimore 10-4 last night at the Fenway Park.
Despite a poor start which saw the hosts go 0-2 behind bottom Orioles, Boston managed to overcome deficit thanks to a six-point midway run which included five homerun. Hardy opened the score for Orioles in the first term after Jones singled to shallow center. Markakis then doubled the lead following Guererro’s grounding into double play with Jones getting out at second. The second inning went scoreless for both sides, while the third one saw Boston get resuscitated by a three-point trot.
Pedroia cut the deficit to one point with a 418 footer, being followed by Scutaro and Ellsbury who brought the first lead right afterwards. Baltimore could only even the situation and cut deficits respectively from then on. Hardy sacrificed to right, allowing Reynoilds madke it 3-3 with Reimold getting to third. That was also the last time the hosts shined as Boston would leave them well behind.
Drew grounded out to first in the same inning and Reddick put Red Sox back into the lead. The fifth round included a 421-foot homer hit by Gonzalez, while the sixth one brought the same leaders a couple of more points thanks to Ellsbury, who fired a 405 footer, and Scutaro who put his side four points ahead. Finally, the next one found Ortiz, Reddick and Saltalamacchia drawing the victory with three straight homers.
On the other side, Orioles scored a last consolation point through Guerrero who made it 4-10 after Lee grounded out to second. Baltimore have thus dropped .424 in the table with 36 wins and 49 defeats, the loss to Red Sox being their fourth in a row, ninth in the past ten games and 22nd on the road. As for Boston, they lead the standings with a .598 record which features 52 wins and 35 defeats, going .5 ahead of former leaders Yankees, the win over Orioles being their third in a row, 27th on the road and seventh in the past ten games.
Said Pedroia: “We swung the bats great and we just have to keep it going. There were a lot of good pitches to hit tonight and we didn’t miss them… There’s a lot of games to be played. We’re not going to get too excited because we’re a half-game up or whatever.” Boston will next meet the same Orioples on Fridat at the same Fenway Park.
Atlanta Braves 6 – 3 Colorado Rockies
Atlanta have extended their sweep to four wins as Braves overcame Rockies yesterday at the Turner Field. Colorado took the first lead in the first round through Herrera who scored the first point early in the meeting, following Giambi’s doubling to left. The second round went dry for both teams, while the third one brought Rockies a second point, but they wouldn’t be able to preserve the advantage.
But on the contrary, they dropped three points adrift of Braves in the same third term when the hosts powered through to a five-point run. Schafer cut the deficit to one point after Gonzalez singled to center, while Freeman hit the first homer of the meeting, being followed by Gonzalez and Joens who made it 4-2. Finally, Uggla ended the session with a fifth precious point, following Heyward’s single to right.
The next inning went scoreless, too, but the fifth one saw the same Braves made it 6-2 through Heyward who fired a 428 footer for a four-point consistent lead. Finally, Colorado could only score a lst consolation point in the eighth, through Ellis. Rockies remain third in the West with a .466 record which includes 41 wins and 47 defeats, the loss to Atlanta being the fifth in a row, seventh in the past ten games and 25th on the road.
Braves, by contrast, have gone 2.5 adrift of leaders Phillies in the East with a .596 winning percentage including 53 victories and 36 defeats. Braves will next meet Philadelphia on Friday at the Citizens Bank Park, while Colorado meets Washington Nationals the same day.
Milwaukee Brewers 5 – 4 Cincinnati Reds
Central leaders had some hard times against Reds last night at the Miller Park where Brewers edged Cincinnati after being led 1-2 at one point. Both sides had a clean sheet start, the first point coming in the second term through Fielder who put Milwaukee into a minimal lead. Reds then stunned their opponents with a 1-2 lead in what was also the turning point of the game. Subbs and Cozart made it 2-1, but that could only trigger Brewers’ midway run which saw the hosts score three points in a row, stating with Weeks’s 408 footer.
Furthermore, Lucroy and Narveson followed him right afterwards, while Hart made it 5-2 in the same fifth term. On the other side, Reds could only cut the deficit to one point as Phillips and Hernandez, who hit a 379-foot homer, scored the last points of the meeting. Cincinnati have thus lost their 234th away game, going fourth in the standings with a .494 record which includes 44 wins and 45 defeats, the loss to Brewers being their sixth in the past ten games.
On the other side, Milwaukee share the leading position with St. Louis Cardinals as both sides have gone .528 this term, including 47 victories and 42 defeats. The win over Reds has been Milwaukee’s second in a row, just third in the past ten games and 31st at home. They meet the same Cincinnati on Friday at the Miller Park.
Chicago White Sox 2 – 6 Minnesota Twins
Minnesota eased past White Sox last night at the US Cellular Field where the visitors scored al of their six points in a row and within four terms. On the other side, Chicago managed to cut the deficit just one inning later, but the last four terms went scoreless. Maurer singled to center, allowing Revere to bring the first lead early in the first term. Nishioka then singled to center as Valencia doubled the lead in the second round.
The same Nishioka made it 3-0 in the same term, following Revere’s single to center. The third round went dry for both sides, while the fourth one saw the same Twins score three more points and draw the victory. Nishioka scored another point after Revere singled to center, while the same Revere made it 6-0 also thanks to an error committed by Konerko. Finally, Chicago’s only consolation came in the fifth round through Teagen, who fired a 355 footer, and Ramirez who scored a second meaningless point for the hosts.
White Sox have dropped .483 this season with 43 wins and 46 defeats, the loss to Minnesota being their third in a row, fifth in the past ten games and 23rd at home. On the other side, Twins have gone .453 with 39 wins and 47 defeats, the win over Chicago being their seventh in the pat ten games, 19th on the road.
Texas Rangers 6 – 0 Oakland Athletics
Texas kept the sheet clean throughout the entire meeting last night at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington where Oakland was given no chance to break through. Kinsler opened the game with an early point scored from Hamilton’s grounding. The second term went scoreless for both teams, while the next four saw the leaders score at least one point in each of them.
Hamilton singled to right as Andrus doubled the lead in the third. The next round brought the hosts a couple of more points through Moreland and Chavez who made it 4-0. Young was the only to fire a homerun, hitting a 420 footer in the fifth, while Chavez closed out the game with a sixth point scord in the sixth round.
Rangers have gone .539 this season, including 48 wins and 41 defeats, the win over Athletics being their fourth in a row seventh in the past ten games and 28th in Arlington. As for Oakland, they lie foot of the table in the same Conference with a poor .438 winning percentage which includes 39 wins and 50 defeats, the loss to Rangers being their sixth in the past ten games and 29th on the road.
Los Angeles Dodgers 6 – 0 New York Mets
Dodgers grabbed a comprehensive win against Mets last night at the Dodger Stadium where the hosts were simply of fire, scoring five of their six points in the sixth term, not allowing their visitors to score any points. The opening term went dry for the two sides who seemed to suggest a tight game in California.
But the second round saw Dodgers take their first lead through Uribe who scored from Miles’s sacrifice fly. The next three terms also went clean, but things were about to get wild in the sixth one. Kemp doubled to deep left, allowing Gwyn and Ethier to make it 3-0 within minutes. Uribe then hit a ground rule double as Kemp scored the fourth point of the night, making this look clear as possible. Finally, Uribe made it 5-0 after Miles doubled to center and Miles gave his side the 20th home win of the season, following Navarro’s triple.
Dodgers remain foot of the table despite the win, with a .427 record which features 38 victories and 51 defeats, the win over Mets being their third in the past ten games. New York are third in the East with a .511 positive percentage which includes 45 wins and 43 losses, the defeat to Dodgers being their fourth in the past ten games and 21st on the road.
Florida Marlins 5 – 0 Houston Astros
Florida have grabbed their 40th win of the season after easing past Astros last night at the Sun Life Stadium where the hosts managed to keep the sheet empty throughout the entire meeting. Stanton scored the first point with a 431 footer, being followed by Cameron who doubled the lead as just. The next two innings went scoreless for both sides as Florida next scored in the fifth term through Bonifacio and Ramirez who made it 4-0 after Morrison doubled to left. Finally, Buck gave his side the clear win in the sixth, following Infante’s single to left.
Florida have extended their positive streak to two wins, but remain foot of the table in the East, the victory over Astros being their sixth in the past ten games and 18th at home. Houston also lie bottom in the Central with a .337 record which includes only 30 wins and 59 defeats, the loss to Marlins being their eighth in the past ten games and 26th on the road.
