Living a poor life as a child may lead to becoming a risk taker.
According to a new research led by Vladas Griskevicius, Ph.D., an assistant professor of marketing at the University of Minnesota, it seems that people who grown up as being poor take greater risks when it comes to finances, hoping that their efforts would be gratified. It seems that these people respond even to threats differently when it comes to this financial environment. The results of the study showed that people who felt like they were poor when they were children were willing to take more risks for immediate rewards, in comparison to people who did not live with the fear of tomorrow as children. These people made decisions more cautiously, as they had lived in a more predictable environment as children. “You can have two people who appear identical, but if they see that the world is a dangerous place such as by seeing news coverage of a new terrorist attack, they’ll diverge in how they respond,” Griskevicius said.
According to Griskevicius, the most important difference between two people is related to the socioeconomic background they come from. This is the main reason for which people act so different when it comes to these types of situations. For instance, a kid who grew up poor, in a bad neighborhood, does not know what to expect from life and that unpredictability is making him take risks that people living in a more secure environment would never take. Some researchers even come to believe that this is the reason for which poor people buy more lottery tickets, because their future is so unpredictable to them, they need something to gratify their actions. Furthermore, it seems that these types of risky behaviors should be cut from the root when children are very young. Given that once they grow older, they know how to decide between good and wrong, they may end up questioning the things they do. They may end up asking themselves why they go to school, if they do not know what tomorrow is going to bring. Still, the researchers involved in the study suggested that children should be taught in school more about the predictable things in life, in order to prevent children from becoming such high risk takers.
