The practice of offering gas discounts has been growing on many superstores. For example, an important grocery chain, Publix has come up with the idea of offering its customers, for $40, gas cards in value of $50 as long as they also purchase products which cost at least $25. Even Wal-Mart has considered the idea and last week launched an offer that is available in 18 states. This offer allows their clients to save 10 cents for every gallon of gas they buy from a Wal-Mart or Murphy gas stations as long as they pay with a type of Wal-Mart card.
Although the prices are increasing for almost every product, the gas price affects a consumer’s behavior the most. The result of this situation is a lower number of customers on week-ends for retailers. The goal of any retailer is to maximize the number of week-end customers. The specialists consider that the solution found by retailers to achieve their goal is efficient, because gasoline is not a purchase optional for customers.
It’s just like in 2008 when the gas price of $4 a gallon determined car manufacturers like Chrysler to offer gas discounts. Chrysler offered three years in which those who bought one of their cars had to pay only $2.99 for a gallon of gas. The tourism industry also reacted back then by offering gas cards. Considering that in June the price of gas reached $3.62, it seems that history is repeating itself. In fact, the Marriott hotels, as well as other tourist destinations, have already started to offer gas promotions. The only difference is that retailers are now also involved, because the recession has affected their sales. In 2008, it was no need for such measures, because the sales actually increased that year by 2.1 percent.
