The fragile political balance in Lebanon was close to collapsing on Monday as the opposition asked the prime minister to support the United Nations-backed tribunal that investigates the assassination of former PM Rafiq Hariri or step down.
Najib Mikati, the current Lebanese PM, was threatened by the opposition with a vote against him in the confidence vote on Tuesday, unless he defied his political supporter, the Iran-and-Syria-backed Hezbollah, and supported the investigation.
Last week the tribunal based in the Hague issued indictments for four Lebanese citizens, one of which is said to be a leader of Hezbollah.
Lebanon was given 30 days to serve the warrant issued by the international tribunal, after which the names of the four could be disclosed to the public.
Hezbollah’s secretary-general Hassan Nasrallah ruled out the possibility of the government helping the international tribunal.
The case of Rafiq Hariri split the population of the country in half, one part supporting the Western countries behind the tribunal that issued the indictments, and another supporting Hezbollah’s policy.
The pro-western party is led by Saad Hariri, the son of former PM. Saad accused Syria of having ordered the assassination of his father.
Makiti is expected to win the vote in the parliament even if he receives a negative vote from the opposition.
Saad Hariri was the Prime Minister of the country until January, when his cabinet fell over the tribunal.
