Up until now many studies have shown that teenagers are addicted to the Internet, as they spend too much time online.
Researchers have stated many a times that internet addiction is a really big problem, given all the technology lying around the place nowadays. Children are more and more into these stuff and they spend too much time surfing the Internet, instead of spending more time doing more outdoorsy things. Moreover, these addictions have been shown to lead to serious problems such as behavioral problems. Even problematic is that Internet addiction can also lead to mental disorders and that is the main reason for which so many studies have been made on the issue. However, a new research made on the subject shows that Internet addiction among college students is on decline.
For the research, lead researcher Dimitri A. Christakis, M.D made a survey based on more than 200 college students. The students involved in the study had to take two tests: the Internet Addiction Test (worth mentioning is that this test is not considered a well-validated psychological test) and the Patient Health Questionnaire. The study results show that less than 4 percent of the teenagers involved have this addiction to the Internet problem, which is a lot less than what previous studies have shown. Furthermore, another thing discovered in the study was that Internet addiction is also linked to depression in teenagers. According to Christakis this should be the main thing that scientists should be concerned when it comes to thinking to treat people for this type of addiction. However, even though the number of people who are addicted to the Internet are on substantial decline, the researchers also said that the addiction accounts for more people than asthma does and that is still a big issue to be dealing with in the future. “Pediatricians and parents continue to report overuse of the Internet in their patients and children, respectively,” said Christakis. He concluded by saying that the most dangerous thing is that college students are the ones who are more likely to be exposed to the threat of Internet addiction, given that they are encouraged to use it for their school projects. Furthermore, it seems that parents should really control their children when it comes to spending too much time in front of the computer, because that can lead to serious problems in their life as adults. Among these things are sleeping problems, depression and anxiety and other mental disorders which can bring these people a lot of problems.
