Central leaders St. Louis have concede their second straight loss after being stunned by Tampa Bay Rays 8-3 yesterday at the Tropicana Field to tie Brewers for the same season record in their Conference.
Despite a better start which saw the visitors take the first lead in the second term, Cardinals could only cut deficits from then on. Molina fired a 423-foot homerun early in the game, but Rays would immediately take things under control and set their own pace. The hosts leveled the score in the third term through Jaso who scored his first point after Johnson grounded out to second. The next round went scoreless for both sides in what seemed to be a tight meeting in St. Petersburg.
Rays took their first lead in the fifth term through Johnson who made it 2-1 after Damon doubled to right, but also thanks to a throwing error committed by Cardinals’ second baseman Schumaker. The sixth term saw Cardinals even the situation through Berkman, who fired a 398-foot homerun, and Holliday, but that was the best they could do.
Tampa Bay went two points ahead within the same term after Joyce and Upton scored the most precious points for the home side. The seventh term went scoreless for both sides, while the eight one highlighted the same hosts extending the lead to five points through Jason, Rodriguez and Johnson.
Despite the loss, Cardinals remain top spot in the Central Conference, sharing the leading position with Milwaukee Brewers who have also gone 45-40 this term. On the other side, Rays are third in the East with a .560 percentage which includes 47 wins and 37 defeats, the win over St. Louis being their fifth in the past ten games and 21st at home.
Said Tampa Bay manager Jeremy Hellickson: “It’s just everything that he does. We need that kind of influence here. He just handles it as well as it possibly can be handled. The way he goes about his business.” Damon also looked pleased with the remarkable performance, claiming that “we beat a very good team. A team that will possibly be playoff bound and World Series bound. It’s good to beat a very good team, especially here at home.”
Detroit Tigers 6 – 3 San Francisco Giants
Tigers overcame West leaders yesterday at the Comerica Park to near the leading position. Although they were led twice, Detroit managed to come from behind every time they needed to and a late rally also helped them to clinch their 27th home win of the season. The first three innings went dry yesterday in Detroit where Giants first scored in the fourth term through Huff.
Tigers broke back immediately through Boesch who evened the situation after hitting a 352-foot homerun. San Francisco then went two points ahead thanks to Burriss and Sandoval who seemed to score Giants’ most precious points of the clash. But the unexpected was yet to come as the visitors could only witness their own ruining from then on.
Cabrera singled to left, allowing Boesch to cut the deficit to one point in the sixth round, while Ordonez singled to center for Inge and Peralta’s big points which propelled Detroit 4-3 ahead in the seventh term. Finally, Avila and Santiago gave their sides a hard-fought victory after Inge tripled to center in the eighth round.

As for the Giants, they remain first in the West Conference with a .565 record which features 48 wins and 37 losses, the loss to Detroit being their third in the past ten games and 24th on the road where they are .500.
Toronto Blue Jays 7 – 4 Philadelphia Phillies
Toronto stunned Phillies yesterday at the Rogers Centre where the hosts succeeded to overcome a four-point deficit they had been subjected to early in the second term. Both sides scored their points in a row with Philadelphia first taking a consistent lead. Victorino brought the first lead after Francisco singled to center, while the same Francisco doubled the minimal advantage after Ruiz hit a ground rule double to center.
Philadelphia reached their best just minutes later through Brown and Ruiz who set a 4-0 lead the visitors didn’t seem to lose that easy. Jays cut the deficit to two points in the third term when Davis resuscitated his side with a precious point which triggered Toronto’s late rally. Toronto went even further, managing to go just tow points within the leaders who were losing more pace as the game progressed. Bautista made things look pretty dangerous for the hosts who were still struggling for another break through.
The seventh term went dry for both sides, while the eighth marked Phillies’ ruining. Thames, Bautista and Encarnacio all fired three straight homers, while Lind closed out the game with a clear though unexpected victory. The second term started with Presely and D’Arnaud’s couple of points as Pittsburgh were looking comfortable in Washington. Even more than that, Jones made it 6-0 after McCutchen doubled to right, being followed by the same great shaped McCutchen who propelled his side seven points ahead minutes later.

Atlanta Braves 4 – 5 Baltimore Orioles

The fourth term went scoreless for both sides, while the fifth one saw the same Orioles making it 3-0 through Britton who completed his double after Markakis doubled to right.

Mets won the local derby against Yankees whom they edged yesterday at the Citi Field where the clash needed ten innings to be decided. It was a tight meeting between the two arch-rivals which saw the visitors lead Mets 2-1 in the ninth term. A late point from Bay pushed the game into the over time during which the same Mets drew the victory.
Beltran scored the first point for Mets early in the first inning after Murphy singled to left, while Yanks’ first reply came after four innings. Cano evened the situation in the fifth term following Swisher’s single to center to confirm the right battle between the two New York teams.
