FC Barcelona and Arsenal have finally come to an agreement regarding Cesc Fabregas’s move to Camp Nou as the 24-year-old player is to sign a five-year deal with the Catalans.
Fabregas has a 200 million euro release clause at Barca and was sold against a 30 million pound amount, his new deal running through the 2016 season. The midfielder left the Gunenrs after eight unsuccessful years at the Emirates where the Londoners’ cornerstone only won a FA Cup and one Community Shield trophy back in 2004. Meanwhile, FC Barcelona won three Champions League trophies, five Spanish titles as well as one Copa del Rey.
The former Catalan player has thus set new heights with the Camp Nou side where he will surely be part of Guardiola’s near future plans. Fabregas looked happy with the move, claiming that “I know that many of you were disappointed when I left but I am here to take up the greatest challenge of my life. After eight years away I hope to leave you all with many great memories… I have waited a long time for this moment. It’s a very special day.”
His transfer was confirmed by the Catalan club which read: “Cesc has signed his contract which ties him to Barcelona until 2016. The buy-out clause is 200 million euros.” His Arsenal adventure includes 212 appearances and 35 goals, including a UEFA Champions League final reached in 2006 when Arsene Wenger’s side were beaten by the same Catalans.
Fabregas has become the second big name to join Guardiola’s side this summer after Alexis Sanchez. The striker has also become the first Chilean to play for the Spanish champions, having penned a five year deal. As for Arsenal, they have lost the second cornerstone after Gael Clichy part with the Gunners to wear the Manchester City jersey. The lack of success made even Samir Nasri to consider his departure as reports see the French player among Roberto Mancini’s transfer list.
Arsenal had a poor season, finishing fourth in the standings, position which will make Wenger’s side fight for a UCL group stage. The Gunners started the new season with a goalless draw against Newcastle United. As for Barca, they started the new campaign with a 2-2 draw against Real Madrid in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup, match which took place last night at the Santiago Bernabeu.
