The sad trial of Casey Anthony will some come to an end and all the persons involved hope that justice will be served. This Sunday morning, the closing arguments opened in court.
The trial which began on May 9, 2011 follows the death of Caylee Anthony who was reported missing on July 2008. The two-year old girl is the daughter of Casey Anthony and after the police found her skeletal remains (five months later) on a road near the family’s residence, the mother was accused of first degree murder on October 14, 2008. At the time, Casey declared she is innocent and her position hasn’t changed in the past three years. She is also charged with aggravated child abuse and manslaughter and it’s possible that she will have to face a death sentence, if found guilty.
The disappearance of the little girl was reported on July 15, 2008 by her grandmother, Cindy. Cindy hadn’t seen her niece for an entire month, although she repeatedly asked Casey about her daughter’s whereabouts. During the trial, the mother claimed that while she was away with her daughter she hired a nanny. The name provided by Casey was identified to be a woman that had never heard about the Anthony family. Even more discrepancy’s were uncovered by the detectives and convinced them of the mother’s guilt.
The prosecutors believe that Casey killed her two-year old daughter with chloroform and used duct tape to cover her nose and mouth. Casey’s defense attorney came up with a different version. He claims that the little girl drowned on June 16, 2008 in the family’s pool because the grandmother forgot about the safety ladder. The mother found the corpse, but was too scared to call the police and chose to keep quiet for over a month. When the truth was uncovered she started to claim that her little girl was stolen.
The defense’s closing argument reminded the jury that Casey Anthony was sexually abused in her childhood by her brother or father, but no evidence was produced. The attorney played the reasonable doubt card. On the other hand, the prosecutors concluded in their closing argument that Casey killed her daughter in order to dispose of her motherhood responsibilities. They based their theory of the little girl’s death on the web searches the mother conducted prior to the child’s death using keywords such as chloroform, internal bleeding and so on. The information was recovered from the mother’s computer hard drive.
Which story do you think is more pertinent? Was it a fair trial?
