Arsenal’s left back Gael Clichy has become a Manchester City player when the French signed the Eastlands side a four-year deal against a reported 7 million pound fee. The new contract comes after the player confirmed he wouldn’t stay at the Emirates with whom he spent eight years.
The 25-year-old scored just one goal in 187 appearances with the Gunners, but is likely to set new heights with the Blues who have already qualified for the UEFA Champions League group stage thanks to a third place grabbed at the end of the season. City are winners of this term’s FA Cup and tend to become a real threat for the next season. Clichy is also winner of the Premiership title and the 2005 FA Cup, but his recent years didn’t bring him any success on the Emirates as Arsenal have been struggling to grab a trophy for six years.
Said Clichy: “When I first came to England, it was Kolo Tour and Patrick Vieira who took me under their wing and really looked after me. Kolo would pick me up and drop me at home and his wife used to cook meals for me. Patrick was always there to offer me advice so it’s wonderful to be back and at the same club they are at.” The French is likely to make his first official appearances with the Blues during the forthcoming American tour.
Arsenal last won the title back in 2004 and the FA Cup in 2005. Clichy’s departure confirmed one of the two rumors which regard Samir Nasri’s move, as well. The French playmaker has declared that it is time for him to win some trophies, too, as the 24-year-old, who has joined the Gunners back in 2008, lacks both the Premier League title and the FA Cup. Nasri, who has scored 18 goals in 85 appearances for Arsene Wenger’s side, is likely to leave London this summer, though neither of the two sides have confirmed his departure.
Nasri finished the season with ten goals, but has already become a cornerstone alongside Fabregas, Robin van Persie and Walcott. Apart from Clichy’s departure and Nasri’s potential one, the Gunners are also fighting to keep Cesc Fabregas whose adventure with Arsenal seems to have come to an end. The Spaniard, who signed the Londoners back in 2003, is the third key player who is supposed to leave Arsene Wenger’s side this summer.
FC Barcelona have improved their offer on their former player, but the talks with the English side haven’t come to an end so far. Arsenal are believed to have asked 40 million pounds for the world champion, money which the Catalans don’t seem to afford. However, the two sides are still debating on his move. Fabregas has already revealed his desire to leave Arsenal for his first club, but the French manager is still keen to keep the midfielder at the Emirates for at least one more season.
Arsenal finished the season fourth with 68 points, but will have to fight for a place into the next term’s UEFA Champions League group stage. As for the European champions, Barca, with whom Cesc is likely to set new heights, defended their title, having won their 21st one this year.
