Achleitner continues to impress at the $220,000 Austrian event as the wild carded player has made an outstanding progress into the final when she blanked eighth favorite Ksenia Pervak 6-0, 6-0. Next up for the crowd favorite is Maria Jose Martinez who ousted Kateryna Bondarenko in straight sets.
Achleitner needed nearly one hour to get rid of the Russian and thus near her best career performance. The world number 109 Austrian is one win from her first ever title and at his second meeting with the 54th-ranked Martinez who will start the last term as favorite. This will also be Achleitner’s first final Austria where she is expected to continue her outstanding showing.
Said the 24-year-old after the semi final win: “The feeling’s amazing. I can’t say it in words. Pervak was happy she won her first match then only had an hour and 15 minutes before our match, and she must have been tired, but anyways, 60 60 is just amazing. I’m so proud and happy to play my first WTA final here in Austria.”
On the other half of the table, Martinez also needed just two sets to oust Kateryna Bondarenko whom the Spaniard beat 6-1, 7-6 after a second-set scare which saw her opponent push the game into the breaker. Martinez led the Ukraine player 5-3 at one point in the decider, only to be leveled minutes later. Fortunately, with a last effort she managed to grab the breaker at five and go one win from her first season title.
En route to the final, Mayr has defeated qualifier Dia Evtimova 6-2, 6-2 in the quarter finals and Petra Martic of Croatia 6-1, 6-4 in the second term. The opening term had brought her a 6-0, 7-6 victory over one of the main favorites Lourdes Dominguez. On the other side, previous to the semi final win, Martinez had had some hard times against Yvonne Meusburger whom she defeated 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.
In the second round, the Spaniard had ousted Sandra Zahlavova 6-4, 6-2, while the first term had brought her a 7-6, 7-6 win against Paula Ormaechea of Argentina. Martinez will meet the Austrian for the second time, the head to head series being led by the Spaniard 1-0 with the only success dating from the 2009 Bogota event.
