Third seed Mikhail Youzhny has guaranteed a quarter final place in Gstaad when the Russian eased past Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in two sets 6-3, 6-2. Youzhny needed just one hour and 15 minutes to clinch the victory and will next meet either Santiago Giraldo or Andreas Haider Maurer.
Istomin conceded four break points and only converted one in the second set. He also fired five aces past his opponent, but this didn’t stop the Russian from staying in touch with the victory throughout the entire meeting. Youzhny, who has become the first player to reach the last eight term in Switzerland, finished the game with a 58 first serve percentage, having won 68 points on service. On the other side, the Uzbek created just three break point chances, ending the game with a poor 32 return percentage and a 53 first serve one.
A potential opponent might be Santiago Giraldo who has provided the biggest surprise of the tournament when the Colombian stunned Guillermo Garcia Lopez, a sixth favorite in Gstaad, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. The Spaniard allowed his opponent to break him five times and win 69 percent on his own service. Lopez hit six aces and had a better first serve percentage of 71, but that didn’t help him too much as Giraldo prevailed in more than two hours.
Matthias Bachinger of Germany has also impressed in Gstaad when he ousted seventh favorite and Stuttgart finalist Pablo Andujar whom he upset 6-1, 6-4. He hit nine aces past his opponent whom he also broke three times in four tries. On the other side Andujar was inferior at all facets, finishing the game with three double faults, a 51 first serve percentage and a poor 28 one on return.
Next up for the German is Julien Benneteau who edged Czech Lukas Rosol 6-2, 6-7, 6-3. The two opponents exchanged 16 aces, nine of which being hit by the Frenchman who won 68 percent of service points an three breaks, as well. As for Rosol, his game included seven double faults, a 32 return percentage and zero break point conversions out of eight chances.
Jarkko Nieminen and Nicolas Almagro are expected to provide the toughest meeting of the Swiss event. The Spaniard, who has been favored by a BYE in the first term will meet the Finnish for the fifth time. Nieminen, by contrast, had to beat Victor Hanescu in the first round and did it perfectly, ousting the Romanian in two sets, 7-5, 6-2.
Despite he conceded seven aces and had a poorer first serve percentage, Nieminen bet Hanescu thanks to four precious breaks and a 46 return percentage which helped him keep the sheet clean throughout the entire game. The head to head series between the Finnish and this season’s Costa do Sauipe, Buenos Aires and Nice events have gone 3-1 to Almagro who last defeated Nieminen at the Wimbledon Grand Slam last year. His next opponent’s win comes from the 2005 Sopot tournament in Poland.
Daniel Gimeno and Feliciano Lopez have set an all Spanish clash in the second term after both of them struggled through into the second phase. Gimeno beat Steve Darcis of Belgium 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 after breaking him four times, while his next opponent edged Swiss Michael Lammer 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 after picking three breaks.
Concerning the second half of the draw, second seed Stanislas Wawrinka, who has been favored by a BYE in the first round, is to meet Peter Luczak of Australia who follows a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 win over Alexander Sadecky. The winner between the two will meet either Igor Andreev, who beat Mischa Zverev of Germany 6-3, 6-2, or Marcel Granollers, who has made an easy debut in Gstaad when the Spaniard crashed Stephane Bohli 6-1, 6-0.
Finally, Andreas Haider Maurer ousted another Swiss player, Yann Marti, whom the Austrian eliminated 6-1, 6-4 in the opening day to meet Giraldo in the second phase.
