Hina Rabbani Khar, the 34-year-old foreign minister of Pakistan succeeded in her first assignment, and the toughest for a Pakistani foreign minister: a meeting with her Indian counterpart, representative of the country that is the sworn enemy of Pakistan.
Hina Rabbani Khar was appointed by President Zardari as foreign minister earlier this month, and is the youngest and first woman to hold such office in Pakistan.
She met S.M. Krishna, the 79-year-old foreign minister of India, and the meeting was concluded with a series of agreements on security, trade, travel, sports, and culture fields.
Commentators believe that her beauty and personal charm contributed substantially to this unbelievable success, and the Telegraph went as far as to say that Khar “swept India off her feet.”
Whether it is only that, or Hillary Clinton’s passage through India had something to do with it, the fact is that the two enemy nations achieved during this round of talks more than they had achieved since 2008, when they came to the negotiation table before the terrible attack on Mumbai, which brought a lot of bad blood between the two.
Khar was received in India with much friendship, and media headlines of newspapers like The Times of India read “Pak Put On Its Best Face.”
Compared with Michelle Obama, glamorous in her fashion, wearing a royal blue kurta that left Indians breathless, Khar spoke of a “mindset change” and about new generations of Indians and Pakistanis that would change the way the situation between the two countries is now.
Though the question of Kashmir has not been settled on this occasion, trade agreements were signed that would double the transactions over the Line of Control, relax control on travel, and increase cultural and sports ties.
The two countries also pledged to fight the terrorism threats and to “exterminate the scourge of terrorism.”
The role of the young minister was praised even by the Kashmir moderate separatist leader Mirwaiz Farooq, who decried the lack of time to talk about Kahsmir.
The social commentators were so exalted with her visit that they said “she could be Pakistan’s next weapon of mass destruction.”
Pakistani President made an excellent choice when he appointed Khar to this office, because Pakistan really needs to put this beautiful face on the face of Osama bin Laden that was stamped on Pakistan’s reputation since he was killed in this country earlier this year.
It remains to be seen whether the beautiful minister will convince her American counterpart to unfreeze the substantial help allocated to her country, which was blocked by the Obama administration because of the increasing mistrust between the two countries, former allies in the fight against terror.
Hina Rabbani Khar was born on January 19, 1977 in Punjab, Pakistan, is a businesswoman, married to Feroz Gulzar, mother to two sons and a daughter.
In 2002 she was elected in the National Assembly from the Pakistani Muslim League, and in 2008 she ran for another mandate from the Pakistani People’s Party, after the Muslim League denied her a new candidacy.
She served as State Minister for Economic Affairs, and in February 2011 she was appointed as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, then acting minister, and finally on July 19, 2011, Asif Ali Zardari appointed her as foreign minister.
The appointment was commented by the president of the country as a prove that the Pakistani People’s Party is committed to bringing women into the mainstream of national life.
Pakistan and India resumed their relations earlier this year, and there was danger that these renewed relations would be severed again, after the bombing in Mumbai earlier this month.
The United States urged India to take an important role in the region as the U.S. troops are ready to pull out of Afghanistan. The move is considered a way of showing Pakistan that its attitude towards Taliban leaders is no longer accepted by the United States.
