Boston have cemented their leading position with a comprehensive win over Kansas City whom they defeated 13-9 on Tuesday night at the Fenway Park, to leave Yankees 2 gamesback behind them.
Royals had a better start though, managing to set a 2-0 early lead in the first inning, only to be leveled later on. Hosmer doubled to center as Cabrera brought the first point with Butler getting to third. Butler then doubled the minimal advantage, following Francoeur’s sacrifice to left, but that could only arouse Red Sox’s comeback.
Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly to left, while McDonald cut the deficit to one point. Even more than that, Pedroia evened the situation right afterwards, following Ortiz’s double to left as the game was far from being over. The second term saw the same Royals take back the lead through Aviles and Treanor who propelled their side two points adrift after Butler hit a ground rule double to deep right. Boston managed to stay in touch with them as they managed a one-point lead, their first in the game, in the third inning.
Pedroia doubled to center as Scutaro put Red Sox one point within the Royals who were still struggling to stay in touch with the victory. But Gonzalez and Pedroia stunned them with a one-point lead, making it 5-4. Kansas managed yet again to turn things upside down, going -5 ahead of the favorites in the fourth term thanks to Gordon, who fired a 421 footer, Escobar, and Butler who also hit a 435 footer in the same inning.
But the unexpected was yet to come as Red Sox would score seven points in a row which also marked their comprehensive win in Boston. Crawford walked and Gonzalez cut the deficit to one point, while an error committed by baseman Aviles cost the visitors a one-point deficit in the fifth. From then on Red Sox held the lead until the end of the clash. Sutton made it 9-7 after Gonzalez singled to left, while Scutaro and the same Gonzalo put the hosts four points ahead of the losing pace Royals.
The same fifth term saw Pedroia make it 12-7, following Reddick’s sacrifice fly. The sixth term went scoreless for both sides, while the seventh one brought Red Sox yet another point through Varitek who fired a 404 foot homerun for a six point lead. Royals could only score two more consolation points in the ninth inning when Hosmer scored from Moustakas’s singling to center, and Francoeur made it 9-13, following Treanor’s single to center.
Said Pedroia: “He’s (Mitch Maier) a position player. He’s just happy to get it over the plate. I hit it pretty good, but I can’t supply that much power.” On the other side, Royals’ manager Ned Yost looked the more disappointed with the loss the Royals failed to stay in touch victory despite scoring nine points. “You score nine runs, you should win the ballgame. But it just wasn’t enough tonight. We just couldn’t command the ball. We couldn’t throw strikes. We had nine walks. Threw 220 pitches in seven innings. It just wasn’t a good night.”
Cincinnati Reds 6 – 8 New York Mets
Mets have gone just over .500 when they defeated Reds on Tuesday at the Great American Ball Park where things could have gone wrong for the visitors despite a good start which saw them score the first five points in a row. Wright grounded out to shortstop as Turner brought the first lead with Beltran getting to second. Beltran then doubled the lead following Murphy’s singling to center as Mets were still looking good.
The second term went scoreless for both sides, wile the third one brought Mets a fourth point and lot of confidence which was dispelled in the next round. Heisey singled to left as Phillips cut the deficit to three points. Renteria then doubled to right as Hernandez and Stubbs resuscitated their side, making it 3-4. Finally, Votto evened the score thanks to a homerun, while Renteria brought the first lead for Reds right afterwards.
But their joy wouldn’t last but one inning as New York got back into the lead in the sixth inning through Bay and Paulino who made it 6-5, following Pridie’s double to right. Even more than that, Mets extended their lead to three points in the seventh round after Beltran and Murphy scored their last two precious points following Murphy and Pagan’s singling respectively.
On the other side, Cincinnati could only score a sixth consolation point through Heisey, following a single from Lewis. Mets remain third in the East, 13.5 behind leaders Phillies, with a .505 record which features 52 wins and 51 losses, the victory over Reds being the second in a row, fifth in the past ten games and 30th on the road. Cincinnati are fourth in the Central, 5 gamesback behind Cardinals, with a .485 percentage including 50 wins and 53 defeats, the loss to Mets being their second in a row, sixth in the past ten games and 25th at home.
Chicago White Sox 4 – 5 Detroit Tigers
Detroit managed to keep a two-gameback gap against their main followers Cleveland when the leaders edged White Sox on Tuesday night at the US Cellular Field. Despite a poor start which saw the visitors led 0-2 in the first inning, Detroit powered through to a four-point rally in the sixth term and never let go of the consistent lead.
Dunn opened the game with a 451-foot homerun, being followed by Konerko who doubled the lead right afterwards. the next three innings went scoreless but the fourth one saw Detroit start their midway run which also marked their big win in Chicago. Cabrera singled to center as Jackson cut the deficit to one point with Ordonez getting to second. The fifth inning also went dry, while the sixth one brought the away side three more points. Cabrera singled to right, while Boesch evened the score with Ordonez getting to second.
Furthermore, Martinez singled to right allowing Ordonez to bring the first lead for Tigers, with Cabrera getting to third, while Cabrera scored the last point of the term, following Peralta’s sacrifice fly to center. White Sox could only level back the score in the same inning through Konerko who hit a 369-foot homerun, and Ramirez who made it 4-4 for a tight finish.
The seventh term went clean for both teams, while the eighth one brought the visitors the winner. Betemit singled to center as Dirks gave the Tigers a hard fought unexpected win. Detroit remain first in the Central with a .534 record which features 55 wins and 48 losses, the win against Chicago being their sixth in the past ten games and 36th on the road where they have just switched .500.
As for the White Sox, they sit third within the same Conference, 2.5 behind second Indians, with a .490 still negative percentage, including 50 wins and 52 defeats, the loss to the leaders being their fourth in the past ten games and 26th at home.
Oakland Athletics 6 – 1 Tampa Bay Rays
Oakland scored one point in each of the third, fourth, fifth and sixth terms on Tuesday night at the O.co Coliseum. And then they became simply unstoppable. The first two rounds went clean in Oakland, while the third one saw the hosts take things step by step. Weeks sacrificed to right as Sizemore brought the first lead. Willingham doubled the advantage in the fourth one when De Jesus also hit a sacrifice fly to left as Jackson got to second.
But Athletics were getting better and better as the game progressed. Thus, Matsui doubled to right for Pennington’s third point, while Sizemore scored his second point in the sixth, following Pennington’s double to left for a 4-0 lead. The seventh inning also went scoreless for both sides, while the eighth one saw Rays score their only consolation through Zobrist who hit a 369-foot homerun.
Oakland broke back immediately through Jackson and Sizemore as they picked the 28th home win of the season. Athletics are second from the bottom in the West with a .447 record including 46 wins and 57 losses, the victory over Tampa Bay being their second in a row and sixth in the past ten games. As for Rays, they are third in the East with a .520 record featuring 53 wins and 49 losses, the defeat to Oakland being their second in a row, seventh in the past ten games and 24th on the road.
Toronto Blues Jays 4 – 12 Baltimore Orioles
Orioles thwarted Toronto on Tuesday night at the Rogers Centre where the visitors took an early four-point lead. Lee doubled to center as Guerrero and Wieters brought the first couple of points in the second inning. Hardy hit a 373-foot homerun in the third one, while Markakis made it 4-0 right afterwards, following Lee’s single to center.
Jays’ first reply came in the same term through Lind, who fired a 407 foot homerun, Escobar and McDonald who threatened with a comeback. But Baltimore broke back immediately as the visitors went four points ahead in the fourth term when Reimold and Hardy fired a couple of homers, and Andino scored a seventh one.
Jays could only cut the deficit to three points in the same inning thanks to Hill’s 383-foot homerun, that being their last one of the night. From then on, it was all about Orioles who ended the game with a five-point rally spread on three rounds, starting with the fifth one. Reimold doubled to left as Lee made it 4-8, while Andino doubled to center for Reimold’s ninth point.
Hardy then hit a sacrifice fly to left, allowing Andino to make it 10-4. Finally, Lee, who fired a 414 foot homerun, and Wieters closed out the game with a comprehensive win. Despite the win, Baltimore remain bottom in the East with a .414 record including 41 wins and 58 losses, the victory over Toronto being their fifth in the past ten games and 15th on the road.
Blue Jays are well above Orioles with a .495 percentage including 51 wins and 52 losses, the defeat to Baltimore being the fifth in the past ten games and 25th at home where they have switched negative (24-25).
