Second seed Novak Djokovic has flown into the third term after easing past Kevin Anderson in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. Next up for the 2010 semi finalist is Marcos Baghdatis who has also reached the next round after a three-set win over Andreas Seppi.
Nole had a tremendous start, managing to build a 5-0 lead at one point thanks to two early breaks. Anderson could only cut the deficit to two games in the eighth game after breaking the Serb in the seventh. Djokovic clinched the opener in nearly half an hour thanks to a remarkable return percentage. As for the second set, it saw the same Australian Open champion leave his opponent one game behind and break Anderson in the seventh term. Djokovic then only held his services to make it 2-0.
Finally, the decider brought the favorite an early break which he converted into a two-game advantage the South African was unable to cut anymore. Even more than that, Djokovic broke his fourth service to go 5-2 ahead and serve for the match. He held his services consistently to make the progress and continue his smooth progress on the London grass.
Said the Serb: “I’m really happy with the opening two rounds in Wimbledon. Two straight-set wins. I cannot ask for more, definitely. And I’m physically feeling great on the court. I’m returning really well, which is important. Using more an efficiency of the serve and precision rather than going for the speed.” Nole will next meet Marcos Baghdatis who crashed the Easbourne champion Andreas Seppi 6-4, 7-6, 7-5.
The two are to meet for the fifth time, the head to head series being led by the world number two who has defeated the 30th-ranked Cypriot four times, last occasion at the 2010 Dubai event in the semi finals. The same day Michael Llodra edged Ricardo Mello of Brazil in four sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to set a meeting with Yen Hsun Lu who has provided a small surprise when he ousted Viktor Troicki 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the second term.
Karol Beck of Slovakia has also provided one of the biggest surprises of the tournament after ousting Guillermo Garcia Lopez in four sets, 7-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to meet either Ryan Harrison or David Ferrer in the next round. Robin Soderling ousted Lleyton Hewitt in five sets, 6-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-4. It was a crazy game, the first break coming late in the eighth game of the second set. The opener saw the two go head to head until the tie-break which the Aussie won at five.
Concerning the second term, it highlighted the same Hewitt taking a 5-3 lead thanks to a late break which he eventually converted into a 2-0 overall lead. But the unexpected was yet to come for the world number 130 who was playing the 26-year-old for the fifth time. Soderling managed to grab a late break in the 12th game to cut the deficit to one set.
Things were getting much easier for the fifth favorite as the game progress. Thus, the fourth set brought the Swede another late break in the tenth game which he eventually converted into a 2-2 draw. Finally, the decider looked almost the same, though it included three breaks, two for Soderling. The Swede was led 1-2 in the fifth set after failing to hold an early serve, but a mid-way comeback showed him leveling the situation and even taking a minimal lead. Soderling then went 5-4 ahead and stunned the Aussie with another break to progress through.
Hewitt still leads the head to head series with Robin 4-1, having last defeated the Swede at the 2009 Cincinnati Masters, the same place Soderling had previously defeated him in 2010. Hewitt’s only victory dates from the will next meet the winner between Igor Andreev and Bernard Tomic of Australia. The Russin follows a five-set exhausting win over Teymuraz Gabashvili whom he had defeated 6-4, 7-6, 6-7, 4-6, 6-3 in the opening round, while Tomis has managed to keep the sheet clean after stunning Nikolay Davydenko 7-5, 6-3, 7-5 in the first term.
David Nalbandian has made a hard progress after surviving a second-set scare against Andreas Haider Maurer of Austrian whom the Argentine ousted 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Next up for him is either third favorite and six-tie champion Roger Federer or Adrian Mannarino. Belgian Malisse Xavier overcame a first-set deficit against Florian Mayer whom he eliminated in four sets, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. Xavier will next play either Jurgen Melzer or Dmitry Tursunov.
On the first half of the table, Devvarman Somdev is to face Mikhail Youzhny. The Indian follows an easy progress after his first opponent Denis Gremelmayr was forced to abandon the opener due to an injury, while Youzhny follows a five-set victory over Juan Monaco whom the Russian stunned 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the first round.
Queens finalist Jo Wilfried Tsonga will fight Grigor Dimitrov for a third term place. The French, who has shown a great shape lately, crashed Go Soeda 6-3, 7-6, 6-2 in the first day, while his next opponent edged Cedrik Marcel Stebe 7-5, 7-5, 7-6. John Isner is to play this year’s Costa do Sauipe and Buenos Aires winner Nicolas Almagro. The American ousted Nicolas Mahut in three sets 7-6, 6-2, 7-6 in the opening day, while the Spaniard overcame Jarkko Nieminen 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the previous term.
