The United States military leaders consider that the offensive in Afghanistan against the rebels is vital these days as the American troops are ready to intensify their offensive against them in the eastern Afghanistan.
The initiative to fight the Taliban comes at a time when the Taliban themselves launch attacks of their own, showing that they have no intention to give up on their positions, months before the U.S. troops will begin their withdrawal from this country, that had been under siege for the last ten years.
Between March 2010 and March 2011, violent attacks in the east of Afghanistan have doubled, but in July the violence rate is on a downward trajectory.
The U.S. troops expect the clashes between them and the Taliban to continue at the same rate in the eastern Afghanistan, as the insurgents now can find sanctuary in the neighboring Pakistan, which withdrew many security troops from the border zone as a result of the cut of funds decided by the Obama administration.
Pakistan’s help was cut by the American administration as a result of the distrust that grew between the U.S. and its ally in Asia in the fight against terror, after the assassination of Osama bin Laden, who was found in Pakistan.
10,000 to 30,000 U.S. troops are expected to withdrew from Afghanistan until the end of the year, and the entire U.S. presence is scheduled to be ended in this country until 2014.
That is why some military leaders consider that it is time now to move against the rebels and get the job done, considering that as the troops will become fewer and fewer, this objective will be more and more difficult to attain.
The withdrawal of the American troops and of their allies from Afghanistan is seen by the Taliban as a victory and as the moment when they seize power again over the country.
They already sent a message of power and determination two weeks ago, as they targeted and killed people nearby the current president, Hamid Karzai.
His half-brother and an advisor were killed on this instance, showing that the Taliban cannot be stopped when they put their mind to killing someone in Afghanistan.
Preparations for the return of the Taliban are being made by the Indians, too, who decided that the relation with Afghanistan would be a good one regardless of who leads the country, which is a complete change in vision compared to other times when India didn’t consent to talk to the Taliban.
While in India, U.S. State Secretary Hillary Clinton urged this country’s leaders to step up and assume leadership of the region, in hope that this would help keep Afghanistan out of the Taliban control.
Meanwhile, the United States troops prepare the Afghan Forces to take control in the country, and assure security for its residents.
France pledged to withdraw its own 4,000 troops from this country by 2014, following the example of the Americans.
