Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, both holders of the Ballon d’Or, lead the Euro Best Player of the Year shortlist pursuant to the latest statistics. 53 journalists see the Argentine as the main favorite for this term’s award which will be decided on August 25.
As for the Portuguese, the former Ballon d’Or is second in the shortlist, being followed by Messi’s FC Barcelona team-mate Xavi Hernandez who has entered yet again on a precious shortlist. The Spaniard was also nominated for this year’s Ballon d’or which the same Messi absorbed for the second time. In 2009 he vied the same Ronaldo who also won one back in 2008.
The 24-year-old Messi won this past term the Spanish title as well as the UEFA Champions League trophy, something which has propelled him top of the list for the next month’s big award. As for the Portuguese, Ronaldo only won the Copa del Rey after scoring the only goal of the final against the same Catalans. Jose Mourinho’s side finished the season second in La liga, four points behind the arch rivals and were ousted from the UCL semi finals by the same Pep Guardiola’s squad.
Ronal made history in Primera last season after scoring the most goals in the domestic competition, 40, and 54 in all competitions, compared to Messi’s 53, but despite that, he remains a second favorite for the trophy. Xabi is also a main candidate for the award after the midfielder played one of the most important roles in Barca’s great route.
Barcelona have four players in the ten-player shortlist, also including Iniesta who is fourth and defender Gerard Pique who lies ninth in the temporary statistics. FC Porto, who won the Europa League trophy this season, have striker Falcao fifth, while Wayne Rooney, who is winner of this term’s Premier League title and a UCL finalist with Manchester United is sixth, being followed by team-mate Nemanja Vidic.
Finally, AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is eighth after the Swedish forwarder won the Serie A title with the Rossoneri, while Schalke 04 keeper Manuel Neuer is tenth after the Germans reached their first ever UCL semi final.
