Nieminen has advanced into the Gstaad second term when the Finnish beat 2008 winner Romania’s Victor Hanescu in straight sets 7-5, 6-2 to meet last year’s champion and top seed Nicolas Almagro .
Despite firing seven aces past Nieminen, Hanescu, who had previously defeated the 30-year-old at the 2010 Hassan II event, conceded two break points in the opener to propel the world number 53 to a two-game lead which allowed him to pick the opener in nearly 45 minutes. The second set saw the same Finnish break the Romanian twice before prevailing.
Both players finished the game with a 64 first serve percentage, but it was the Finnish to generate a much better service percentage of 73, compared to Hanescu who won just 45 percent of service points. The Romanian also had a poor 27 return percentage which hindered him of staying in touch with the victory.
Nieminen will meet Almagro for the fifth time, the head to head series between the two having gone 3-1 to the Spaniard who last defeated the Masku born at this year’s Wimbledon event. Nieminen’s only victory dates from the 2005 Sopot event, being expected to start tomorrow’s game as second favorite in front of the top seeder who has won three titles so far this season, in Costa do Sauipe, Buenos Aires and Nice.
The same day Santiago Giraldo edged sixth favorite Guillermo Garcia Lopez 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 to make an impressive progress into the second round where the Colombian will meet Andreas Haider Maurer of Austria. Lopez hit seven aces past the Colombian to whom he conceded five services and whom he only broke twice.
Lopez had a 72 first serve percent, two double faults and a poor 31 return percentage, compared to Giraldo who won 69 percent of service points and 40 percent on return. Finally, Daniel Gimeno Traver overcame Steve Darcis 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 after firing ten aces past the Belgian who had a 53 first service percentage and who managed to convert just three of 12 break point chances. Traver broke his opponent four times out of 16 opportunities to pick the hard fought win in nearly two hours.
Next up for Gimeno will be either Michael Lammer of Switzerland or seed Feliciano Lopez of Spain. Denis Istomin has made an uneasy progress when the Uzbek beat Martin Fischer 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to meet Mikhail Youzhny in the second round, who has been favored by a BYE in the opening day. On the same second half of the table, second seed Stanislas Wawrinka is to make his debut in the second term, against Peter Luczak of Australia who survived an early scare against another Swiss, Alexander Sadecky, whom he edged in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6.
Mischa Zverev is to meet Igor Andreev in the opening round, while Marcel Granollers faces Stephane Bohli. Pablo Andujar, finalist in Stuttgart earlier this month, has been set a Matthias Bachinger clash, while Frederico Gil meets Joao Souza in the first round. Julien Benneteau and Lukas Rosol will also fight for a second term berth, while seed Fernando Verdasco is favored by a BYE in the first round.
