Hundreds of people from Rempug Betawi Forum (FBR) held a demonstration in front of the DKI Jakarta City Council building on Tuesday (12/07/2011) and urged the coty council to evaluate the presence of foreign NGO Greenpeace in Jakarta, for refusing to register the organization to the Jakarta city government.
In his speech, action coordinator Ibrahim asserted that Greenpeace as a foreign NGO shall be subject to the prevailing rules in Jakarta. “We ask the City Council to urge the government to evaluate the presence of Greenpeace,” he said.
Moreover, he added, Greenpeace seems to be an arm extension of foreign interest because they never interfere with foreign companies operating in Indonesia. Therefore, the FBR asked Parliament to form a special committee to investigate the NGO.
FBR also urged the Jakarta city government to evaluate all of Greenpeace activities including stopping all of their operations in Jakarta if necessary.
The FBRs are then accepted by members of the Commission A DKI Jakarta People Representative, Abdul Aziz and Suprawito. In a meeting that was held at a parliament, room Abdul and Suprawito welcomed the FBR demands.
“In principle we do not agree with those who violate the law. We will also urge the administration to evaluate Greenpeace. If it does not bring benefit to the nation, then it should be dealt with,” said Abdul Aziz.
In relation to the formation of special committee to investigate Greenpeace other activities, Abdul promised to bring the proposal to the chairman of the board for discussion. “Soon we will convey this proposal to the factions to further conveyed to the leadership,” said Abdul.
Meanwhile, member of Commission III Ahmad Yani believes that the demands of FBR are reasonable. According to him, Greenpeace was obliged to register their organization to the Jakarta local government and should be subject to the legal sovereignty of Indonesia.
According to the politician Development United Party, whatever the motives of Greenpeace in Indonesia, they must have permission from the government of Indonesia and the Jakarta administration.
Previously when confirmed, Southeast Asia Media Greenpeace campaigner Hikmat Soeriatanuwijaya have said that all of the activity and the presence of Greenpeace as an organization engaged in saving the environment, is always in compliance with all prevailing regulation.
“Greenpeace has been registered with the central government, namely the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights. So we are not an illegal organization,” said Hikmat.
