Red Sox have extended their positive streak to six wins after overcoming Baltimore 8-6 yesterday at the Fenway Park where the hosts managed to dispel a 2-6 deficit with a five-point late rally to keep Yankees one gameback adrift.
Boston had a batter start which brought them a 2-0 meaningless lead set early in the first inning through Pedroia and Gonzalez. From then on the hosts could only witness an outstanding six-point run set by the Orioles in the second term. Lee thus cut the deficit to one point after hitting a homer, while Wieters evened the situation right afterwards. Furthermore, Reynolds brought bottom Baltimore the first lead minutes later after Andino singled to right, point which saw the visitors suggest a win at leaders’ home.
Markakis reached on infield single to shortstop, allowing Reimold extend the lead to two points. Jones then singled to left as Andino made it 5-2 within the same term, while Markakis ended the midway session with a sixth one. But that could only trigger Boston’s sensational comeback. Scutaro and Pedroia replied with a couple of homers in the same inning as Red Sox were preparing to cut the deficit. Gonzalez scored the last point of the term after Youkilis hit the fourth homer of the game as the scoreboard displayed a 6-6 result after the first two rounds.
The third inning went scoreless for both sides, while the fourth one saw the same Red Sox take back the lead through Pedroia who made it 7-6 after Ortiz walked. The next two terms also went dry, but Boston were still drawing the victory. Thus, Drew gave his side a hard-fought win in the seventh term as Red Sox were celebrating their 28th home win in front of a 37,000 warmly crowd.
Said Orioles manager Buck Showalter: “The break is a good thing, obviously. Hopefully, guys get as far away as possible from it and come back and play these last 74 games like we have at times this year and get back to playing good baseball.” Boston have improved their season record to .611 which features 55 wins and 35 losses, the victory over Baltimore being their ninth in the past ten games.
Baltimore remain foot of the table with a .409 record which includes 36 wins and 52 defeats, the loss to Boston being their seventh in a row and ninth in the past ten meetings. They will next meet Cleveland Indians on Thursday, while Red Sox face Tampa Bay Rays on Friday.
Philadelphia Phillies 14 – 1 Atlanta Braves
Phillies thwarted Braves yesterday at the Citizens Bank Park where the visitors paradoxically took the first lead. Uggla scored the first and only point for Atlanta in the second term also thanks to an error committed by baseman Howard. From then on things would go from bad to worse for the same Braves. Phillies scored all their points in a row. Myberry Jr. doubled to left as Brown leveled the score in the same second term.
Martinez then made it 2-1 after Howard singled to center, while Utley made it 3-1 also thanks to an error committed by baseman Uggla. The fourth term brought the Red Sox another point through Mayberry, while the seventh one saw Phillies score six more points. Finally, Ibanez hit a 376-foot homer for a 12-1 consistent advantage. Ruiz scored the last point in the eighth term after Mayberry grounded into fielder’s choice.
Philadelphia leads the East Conference with a .626 record which includes 57 wins and 34 defeats, the win over Atlanta being their sixth in the past ten games and 23rd at home. On the other side, Braves are second with a .587 percentage, including 54 wins and 398 losses.
