Looking at Casey Anthony, at her situation and at her trial, people cannot help of thinking of another doe-eyed criminal, Amanda Knox. The two seem quite similar, at least until the verdict.
From that point on the fates of these two women took a sharp turn, one to the worst and one for the, unexpected, best. Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison for killin her friend and roommate Meredith Kercher in Italy. Anthony, to the populace outrage, was acquitted of the crime of killing her daughter Caylee in 2008 in Florida. On the other hand, she was convicted of lying to the investigators about key points in the investigation. Although the basis of the two cases is quite different, they are strangely similar in nature.
Knox didn’t act like a killer on her trial, and certainly neither did Anthony. Not to mention that being both women made this even more unusual. Both of their faces could be found on all the tabloids and were hated, and loved in the same time by the populace.
Both women negatively intervened in the investigation and misled their initial interrogations. Knox falsely accused an innocent man, and Anthony lied on four accounts to the investigators.
Each of them has suffered because of their outlandish behavior. Both were denied any form of bail or house arrest. Instead both women spent at least two or three year in prison.
The most eerie thing of all was that in both cases, they could not find “fresh” evidence, both bodies were too decomposed to find some conclusive evidence, no murder weapon, and there could not be established a strong motive for the crime on both accounts.
Then why does Anthony go free and Knox is still in jail?

The huge difference resides within the difference between the Italian legal system and the American one. In the US the suspect is considered innocent until proven guilty. In Italy, figuratively speaking, it’s backwards. Time also played an important role, fighting against Knox, but was on Anthony’s side, since in Italy the whole case took more than one year, with 1-2 weeks pause between sessions. In Anthony’s case everything had been wrapped up in six weeks.
And the other element that truly made the difference between the two was the lawyers coaching: in Anthony’s case, they said that she would need to act as a true murder suspect, even her dress should emanate that. She stood in front of the jury with no makeup on and crying like someone that couldn’t possibly comprehend what was going on.
On the other hand Knox received no counseling at all, to the surprise of most prosecutors. She barely made eye contact with the jury and actually served her lawyers with chocolate. Does that seem like responsible and respectful attitude?
All in all, this gets to show that being the at the right place, could literally save your life from the “blind” justice.
