The Indonesian Minister of Forestry Zulkifli Hasan said that the rate of deforestation in Indonesia has reached around 600 thousand hectares per year.
“This figure is lower than in 1999-2002, in which the deforestation rate was around 4 million hectares every year,” said Zulkifli Hasan in Pasaman, West Sumatra, on Monday, after opening a coordination meeting with the Provincial Government of the Regent / Mayor in West Sumatra.
Minister of Forestry says the greatest deforestation occurred in areas of East Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Lampung, and South Sulawesi.
To compensate for deforestation, this year the government is targeting the implementation of planting 1.5 billion trees throughout the territory of Indonesia.
“Planting trees is the means to cope with disasters and to anticipate climate change,” he continued.
“Deforestation impacts of forest decline both in-quality and quantity,” he said.
In addition, the potential of forests to contribute to national income were disrupted by the damage. Currently, the Ministry of Forestry has a policy to not issue new permits for forest exploitation.
Zulkifli further explained that the Ministry of Forestry had insisted that no tolerance for perpetrators of illegal logging of forest in the country because of its impact is very harmful for the environment and society.
He mentioned the current area of critical land in Indonesia has reached 40 million hectares, with the Indonesian total forest area of around 187 million hectares.
The Minister also asked local leaders or community throughout Indonesia, especially in areas prone to forest fires, to keep high alert and be vigilant to prevent forest fires.
“In 2010 the government managed to suppress 80 percent of existing hotspots in the country caused by forest fires and burning of land,” said the Minister. He added that it is necessary to regularly socializing in the community about the culture of safe burning and not to cause forest fire.
“So far, more forest fires caused by the public negligence” he continued.
He mentioned fire-prone areas of forest that is the province of Riau, West Kalimantan, Jambi, Central Kalimantan, South Sumatra and North Sumatra.
