Schizophrenia is a mental disorder which is characterized by the disintegration of the thought process and the emotional responsiveness and it affects millions of people all around the world.
According to a new research it seems that the cause of schizophrenia lays in the genetic mutations or mistakes that are present in people who suffer from a certain disease. From what the lead researcher of the study, Guy A. Rouleau, M.D., Ph.D., of the University of Montreal, said it seems that the findings of this new study will help scientists understand schizophrenia better and maybe find a way to cure it.
From what Rouleau said, this may be the answer to why there are so many people suffering from schizophrenia all around the world. Given that the mutations are located in different genes, the researchers are going to establish some genetic networks in order to establish exactly how these gene mutations make people develop schizophrenia. Some kind of a treatment should be found for schizophrenia as there are about 24 million people suffering from it world-wide and more than half of these people do not have access to good treatment for their illness.
In order to see how these genetic mutations affected people, the researchers gathered and analyzed almost 20,000 genes from each patient that was part of the study. The researchers said that they were particularly interested in the genes which were present in the patients but not in their parents. These genes are called “de novo.” According to Rouleau, the findings of the study do not only provide insight into a better understanding of this terrible condition called schizophrenia, but they also open some doors in matters of understanding the molecular mechanism which is involved in the human brain’s development and function. Furthermore, it seems that the findings about these “de novo” genes also provide some insight in what concerns other types of conditions that affect the brain, such as autism and mental retardation.
