Luck was definitely on the side of a Verizon customer service representative when on Saturday a ball worth a six-figure check and a history page landed in his lap.
23-yer-old, Christian Lopez was able to catch the ball that represents the 3,000th hit of Derek Jeter, the captain of the Yankee team. The ball was “the victim” of a homerun to right-center, but the lucky spectator didn’t feel entitled to keep it. He decided to return the ball to Derek Jeter despite the fact that Bloomberg estimated that the price that could have been achieved by the ball during an auction could have been as high as $250,000.
Many thought that the young man will see the ball as a business opportunity, especially because of his $100,000 debt in student loan. Lopez surprised everyone with his gesture and explained it by saying that it is the right thing to do: “It never crossed my mind to not give it back. I’m only 23. I have plenty of time to make money”. How many of us would have done the same?
However, his gesture was appreciated by the Yankees. The officials decided to offer Lopez a number of four luxury box seats that will allow him to take his friends to all the next 32 games that are left from the season. The tickets are also valid for the Yankee games that will take pace in the playoffs and as parts of the World Series, if the team gets there. It’s not bad is it? The $40,000 worth tickets are a nice consolation prize for the man who decided to return a priceless ball.
