All people have to deal with everyday stress but not all of them know how to cope with it. According to a new study, people who are able to treat everyday problems with humor have more chances of being satisfied.
Using humor is not for everybody, but those who can treat things with a pinch of irony have the best chance at being satisfied by the end of the day. Going through stressful situations is a very common thing and having to cope with the stress can get very annoying and hard. However, if people would take a step back and try to laugh at the small setbacks of the day, they would be more satisfied with how things turned out. A group of researchers tried to analyze how humor helps people deal with stressful situation.
In the study took part 149 students who had to complete daily diary reports for a period of 14 days. What they had to do was to write about the most bothering situation they had to go through during the day, how they managed to cope with it and how satisfied they felt about themselves at the end of the day. Among the most popular coping strategies, there were religion, venting, self-blame, self-destruction, denial and substance use. Among these strategies, the ones which had the most negative effects on the overall report of satisfaction were self-blame, denial, behavioral disengagement and venting. The more the students used these strategies, the more unsatisfied they reported to be at the end of the day. By comparison, the positive reframing such as seeing things in a more positive light, accounted for more positive effects on the overall satisfaction. These types of strategies, among which treating things with a bit of humor, helped people cope better with stressful situations.
Psychologists Drs. Joachim Stoeber and Dirk Janssen from the University of Kent said that the findings are important, as they show that even the more stressed out people can cope with the burden of stress by laughing a bit at the things that are happening to them. That is, people who have a more positive thinking tend to be more satisfied with themselves at the end of the day, even though they may have gone through some serious troubles. The trick is to find the positive outcomes of a “failure,” trying to see the positive things that you achieved rather than the negative things you had to deal with. “It’s no use ruminating about small failures and setbacks and drag yourself further down,” Stoeber said in a statement. “Instead it is more helpful to try to accept what happened, look for positive aspects and — if it is a small thing — have a laugh about it.”
