The Indonesian private telecom operator Axis plans to add 9,000 Base Transceiver Station (BTS) throughout the Indonesian archipelago. Construction of these base stations using financing from the Saudi Telecom Company (STC) which was accepted by Axis in May this year. STC recently increased its shareholding in Axis to 80%, and is committed to the long term development of the telecommunications industry in Indonesia
The news was delivered Anita Avianty, Axis Head of Marketing Communications on the sidelines of a presentation Axis Network Test. “We obtained funds of USD 1.2 billion which we will use for the construction of 9.000 BTS as well as the expansion of mobile broadband within the next five years,” said Anita at Novotel Hotel, Yogyakarta on Friday (7/15/2011) ago.
In addition, Axis will also allocate USD 3.2 million to purchase battery for these BTS. “For areas that prone or experiencing instability of electricity supply, we anticipate it by buying batteries stationed on those required base stations. We also distinguish the BTS batteries between Java BTS and Sumatra BTS, because the battery specification for Sumatra is different and the price is also more expensive”explains Anita.
Anita also admitted of reports about stolen equipment at Axis BTS that have caused significant communication disorders. “Every day we receive reports of theft. To anticipate, we now tied the security system at the base stations to the Network Monitoring System (NMS),” he said.
Marc Proulx, General Manager of Technology Operations Axis also adds that the three important components that are most frequently stolen are feeding cable, grounding cable, and batteries. “These three components are essential to the BTS. We’ve been preparing good infrastructure for customers, but because there are irresponsible people, our service to customers is also disrupted,” said Marc.
Until the period of June 30, 2011, throughout Greater Jakarta to East Java, Axis has had as many as 3,550 2G BTS 2G and as many as 1,100 3G BTS. This number has increased compared to the year 2010 where the Axis only has 3,300 2G BTS 2G and 950 3G BST. Over the next three years, this number will increase significantly thanks to the financing scheme mentioned above.
“The number of base stations (cited) does not include base stations that are shared with XL. If it is included then there are more base stations on the network” closed Anita.
Axis is one of the fastest growing telecom providers in Indonesia. Within only three years of operations, Axis has invested USD 1 billion, covers over 80% of the population, and is available in more than 400 cities throughout the country.
