Hillary Clinton concluded the European part of her world tour after a visit in Turkey and Greece, and is heading toward India, where she is to discuss regional security problems with the prime minister of a country that’s just been through a bloody terrorist attack.
Clinton arrived in Istanbul on Thursday, and participated in the Contact Group on Libya, hosted in the capital of the country, and attended by many foreign ministers of the countries involved in the conflict.
During the meeting, the European Western countries and the United States of America declared they no longer considered Qaddafi’s regime as legitimate, and moved to recognize the Transitional National Council in Benghazi as the only authority in the country.
This was not only a formal acknowledgement, but a way to unfreeze funds of the Qaddafi family, which have been retained since the beginning of the conflict a few months ago.
Clinton also discussed the matter of the Middle East and urged the countries in Europe and Middle East to convince Israel and the Palestinians to return to the negotiation table, thus preventing the Palestinian Authority from proclaiming a state of Palestinians in September, at the United Nations General Assembly.
On Sunday she participated in the Islamic Conference on religious tolerance, and met the leaders of the state, promising them the support of the United States both for realizing the goal of Turkey to become a member of the EU and to ensure its domestic security.
Two incidents happened in Turkey while the U.S. State Secretary was there. The first, had as result the death of 13 Turkish soldiers, killed in an ambush by the Kurdistan Worker’s Party, and the second was a successful attempt of the Turkish police to thwart a bombing of the Turkish embassy in Ankara.
Hillary Clinton was very steady in her support for the Turkish authorities in their fight against all sort of terrorist attacks and organizations.
From Turkey, Clinton went to Greece, where she promised the authorities that the United States would help their country to go through this rough period of their economy.
In India, Clinton will talk to the leaders in New Delhi, where she is expected to propose them a cooperation in matters of security, and then to the city of Chennai, former Madras, one of the Indian cities that is undergoing a serious economic boost and is opened to foreign investment.
She comes to India after 19 people lost their lives and 130 were wounded in a new round of attacks on Mumbai, being susceptible of undermining again the relations between India and Pakistan, recently thawed a little by the military talks engaged.
The attacks were not claimed by no one but it is very possible that the blame be assigned, even unofficially, to Pakistani-based organizations.
India’s role in the region becomes even more important after the re-emergence of the Taliban in Afghanistan, and the tensed relations between Pakistan and the United States.
Last week, the Taliban claimed the assassination of the Afghan president’s half-brother, and on Monday the assassination of Karzai’s advisor, in a series of attacks that seem to target the people around the president.
India fears that the American plan to withdraw troops from Afghanistan will leave the region at the mercy of Islamist groups, which could take advantage of the power vacuum in the country that has been torn by a decade of war.
Economic ties will also be discussed at the meeting between the U.S. State Secretary and the Indian business people.
From India Clinton will go to China, Hong Kong and Indonesia. In China, she will probably have to face the anger of the officials, who already reacted brutally to White House’s decision to receive the Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama.
