The human brain has the capacity of protecting itself from the changes which come with old age
The brain is the most complex thing in our bodies and researchers have been studying it for years. Nowadays, they are trying to find some methods to stop the brain from changing with old age.
Given that people are living longer nowadays, the risk of dementia is also on the rise and researchers seem to think that factors such as high levels of stress, accumulation of toxic waste products and also inflammation may bring some unwanted changes in the brain. Still, they also found out and they are trying to develop the idea that the brain has a certain mechanism which can protect it from the changes which come with old age. For instance, a group of researchers form Europe made a study on mice to see the function of the cannabinoid-1 receptor (CB1). A receptor is able to trigger a chain of signals between proteins and other substances. This receptor can not only create addictions, but is can also play a very important role in the degeneration of the brain. “If we switch off the receptor using gene technology, mouse brains age much faster,” said the principal author of the study, Önder Albayram. “This means that the CB1 signal system has a protective effect for nerve cells.”
The researchers tested their theory on mice and what they observed was that those mice that had their CB1 receptor switched off showed signs of diminished learning and memory capacity, when it came to performing some simple tasks. Furthermore, it seems that the older the mice, the more noticeable the degeneration process was. By comparison, it seems that those mice that had their CB1 receptor perfectly functioning showed no signs of such things, which comes to support the idea that the brain can protect itself through some mechanism from the changes old age implies.
The researchers concluded by saying that further studies must be done on the issue in order to see exactly how these mechanisms work and if they get to a common ground, they may also be able to come up with some new substances which will help finding new drug therapies.
