Budapest: Zakopalova, Bondarenko Ease Through
Zakopalova through in Budapest
Klara Zakopalova eased past unseeded Chinese Xinyun Han in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 at the $220,000 Budapest event to meet the winner between Nina Bratchikova and Aleksanda Krunic in the second round.
The Czech needed nearly one hour to secured a second term spot, the 29-year-old having started the Hungarian event as one of the main favorites. The same day Alona Bondarenko needed just 55 minutes to get rid of Sandra Zahlavova whom she eliminated in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1 in the last meeting of the day. Next up for the Ukrainian will be compatriot Olga Savchuk who beat Evgeniya Rodina of Russia in three sets, after surviving an early scare 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Romania’s Irina Begu has also made an easy progress after defeating Laura Pous in two sets, 6-4, 6-4 to meet Ajla Tomljanovic of Croatia who has been favored by a BYE in the first term. Fifth favorite Anabel Medina has secured a second term spot after eliminating Anastasia Pivovarova in two sets 6-3, 6-1, the Spaniard being expected to meet Lesia Tsurenko who has also been favored by a BYE at the Hungarian red clay tournament.
Top seed Roberta Vinci, winner of this season’s Hertogenbosch event, is to meet Lenka Jurikova of Slovakia in the opening day, in what will be their first ever clash. Host Timea Babos will be next up for the winner between the two, the unseeded player being favored by a BYE. On the same first half of the draw, Zuzana Kucova and Mathilde Johansson will fight for a second round spot, while crowd favorite Katalin Marosi will face Ukraine Kateryna Bondarenko in the opening term.
Concerning the second half of the table, second favorite Sara Errani is o make her Hungarian debut against Romania’s Madalina Gojnea whom the Italian will play for the first time ever. Petra Martic and Stefanie Vogele of Switzerland will also be trying for make a good figure in Budapest, the two being expected to meet for the first time. Finally, Lucie Hradecka, another favorite in Hungary, is to face Eva Birnerova in the first round, while Italian Corinna Detonti and Estrella Cabeza of Spain will also fight for a second round place.
