Newport: Dimitrov, Bogomolov Reach Second Term
Dimitrov eases through into the second term
Second seed Grigor Dimitrov hit eight aces past Argentine Brian Dabul whom he ousted in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 in the first term of the $442,500 Newport grass event, to meet either Denis Kudla or Ivo Karlovic in the next round.
The Bulgarian, who packed from Wimbledon in the early terms, saved three breaks in front of his opponent whom he was playing for the first time this season. “I was quite happy to get through it. I knew he was dangerous on grass, especially being a lefty, so I was prepared to play well,” said one of the main favorites of the Newport tournament. Dimitrov is at his first appearance at the American grass, and has started this edition as second favorite.
The same day Alex Bogomolov Jr. struggled through after edging Mischa Zverev of Germany in three sets and one hour and a half after surviving an early scare, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Next up for him is Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium who eased past Denis Gremelmayr in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. World number 66 is to meet the 23-year-old for the first time, the 147th-ranked being expected to start the clash as a second favorite despite his easier debut win.
Sixth favorite Olivier Rochus overcame Australian Greg Jones in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 after winning 87 percent of service points. Rochus will next meet the winner between Nicolas Mahut and Sebastian Decoud. Donald Young has also made an easy progress at the Newport event after eliminating Paul Capdeville in straight sets 6-2, 6-1, needing just 51 minutes to do that. The Chilean allowed his opponent to break him five times, twice in the opener and three times in the decider. Next up for the American will be either Alex Bogdanovic or Robias Kamke who are to meet on Tuesday.
Finally, Matthias Bachinger and Dustin Brown offered the tightest opener in the all-German first round which saw the first one make the progress after a three-set epic. Bachinger beat his compatriot 7-6, 6-7, 6-1 and will next meet the winner between Matthew Ebden. Tommy Haas is also at the Newport tournament, being expected to meet Michael Berrer in the first round.
Top seed and defending champion John Isner is to start this term’s edition with a meeting against Slovak Karol Beck whom he’ll be playing for the first time ever. On the same first half of the draw, Ryan Harrison and Arnaud Clement will also fight for a place into the second term with the Frenchman starting as favorite.
Igor Kunitsyn is favored by a BYE as the Russian will meet either Edouard Roger Vasselin or Richard Bloomfield in the second term. Finally, Dudi Sela of Israel and Michael Yani of United States are to fight for a second round spot.
