After a head injury, the brain is left with a disruption of normal function that is called traumatic brain injury (TBI). 1.7 million Americans are affected by this condition annually.
The long-term effects of a brain injury include very high risks of developing mental and physical problems and these problems can significantly affect rehabilitation, sadly. Still, according to a new study, it seems that being spiritual helps a great deal when it comes to recovering from a traumatic brain injury. “Among healthy adults, religion and spirituality have shown strong association with improved life satisfaction and physical and mental health outcomes,” said Brigid Waldron-Perrine, Ph.D. In order to determine what the effects of religion are on the people’s way of recovering from traumatic brain injuries, Waldron-Perrine and colleague Lisa J. Rapport, Ph.D., analyzed 88 people who had all traumatic brain injuries. What the two women did was to put these people through a series of neuropsychological tests and ask them some question related to their spirituality. Then, the participants also had to go through some tests which measured their cognitive abilities.
After the study was complete, the researchers got to the conclusion that from all the participants, the ones who claimed to be more religious were more prone to go through a better emotional and physical rehabilitation process. According to Waldron-Perrine, public religious activities or practices did not have the same effect on these people. From what she said, it seems that this does not happen because people who have suffered a traumatic brain injury lack the capacities of participating in these activities by themselves, and they require help from others to perform them. Although previous studies have shown that religious beliefs had something to do with the well-being of suffering people, the study made by Waldron-Perrine and Rapport shows very clearly that this is a truly unique and strong predictor of positive health outcomes in TBI patients. Given that people usually rely on the things they can do, for people suffering a traumatic head injury, religion seems to be the one thing they can do very well and that helps a lot when it comes to their rehabilitation process.
