United States prosecutors announced that the case of sexual assault against former IMF managing director, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, will be dropped next time he appears to court, that is in two weeks time. The announcement was made by New York Times on Tuesday.
The drop of charges could happen even earlier, sources say, and is motivated by the credibility of the plaintiff, which becomes more and more thin as the prosecution looks into details of her background.
The NY Times quotes a top investigator to say that the drop is a certainty, and that the entire investigation crew knows the case cannot stand in court.
Since DSK was arrested, the investigators found many things about the woman who accused him of having assaulted her.
Thus, they found out she lied to the immigration services when she came to the U.S. seven years ago, that she kept on lying to the authorities, so that she could have an apartment, which should have been assigned to a person in real need.
The worst thing they found out, however, was that she was working as a prostitute in the Sofitel hotel, and that she had received money from men she was not kindred to.
This information practically blew the whole case, and left the prosecution trying to build a case that would hold in court with a main witness whom, in their own words, “cannot be trusted with anything that comes out of her mouth.”
The first sign that the case was not that strong anymore is that the judge released DSK on Friday from home arrest, and allowed him to move freely within the United States.
In the meantime, in France, the young journalist and writer Tristane Banon is considering filing a complaint against him on Tuesday for attempted rape that allegedly happened back in 2012, when DSK was a representative in the lower House of the French National Assembly.
DSK slammed Banon’s accusations as “imaginary,” and moved to counterattack it by a complaint of slander.
In any event, according to French judicial system, if Banon files a complaint, the prosecution will conduct a short investigation to see if the case has enough evidence to incriminate DSK. If this preliminary investigation reveals reasons to prosecute the man, then a lengthier investigation is launched, that could last years, to see if the case stands a chance in court.
The Socialist newspaper in France, Liberation, asks on the front page of his edition in Monday “DSK back?” a question which, if the charges are dropped in the U.S., could still be on in as much as his political career in France is concerned.
It is to be expected, some Socialist leaders say, that DSK would be perceived as a victim of overzealous American prosecutors and journalists, who overlooked the presumption of innocence, and destroyed his career at IFM.
There could be others who would not go pass the accounts related to his sexual habits and taste for luxury.
