Red Bull have set yet another pole position as Mark Webber came fastest in Saturday’s qualifying in Nurburg with a 1 minute and 30,079 time, being followed by this year’s Chinese winner Lewis Hamilton and six-title team-mate Sebastian Vettel.
The Aussie, who declared that he is ready to gun for Vettel this season, is 80 points behind the German team-mate in the general standings and is unlikely to achieve his dream of finishing top spot this season, title which might be held by the same Vettel who has won six races this year and set three second positions. Lewis Hamilton came second, just 0,055 seconds behind the Red Bull veteran, while the world champions, who is expected to delight the home crowd in Sunday’s race, came 0,137 seconds slower.
Vettel had previously come first in the third free practice, but failed to shine that bright in the qualifying. However he remains a main favorite for tomorrow’s contest when he will be chasing his first Nurburg success. Winner of the British Grand Prix and former world leader Fernando Alonso, who is also winner of last term’s Nurburg’s race, will start alongside Vettel, having set a 0,363 second gap yesterday after spending 16 laps on the track.
His Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa came fifth with a .0,831 second gap, while Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg was the first to come over a second. Winner in Canada Jenson Button will start on seventh position, while Adrian Sutil impressed with a 1,931 second gap, coming the eighth fastest. Renault will have Vitaly Petrov on ninth position as the Russian was 2,108 seconds slower than the Australian leader, being the first to come over two seconds.
Webber looked happy with his great form and performance, claiming that he will try to improve it on Sunday. “My form has been getting a little bit better over the last few races. The session went pretty well. The boys did a great job on the car, some pretty late nights in the lead-up.” Vettel also looked pleased with his run, taking into account that he was just over a hundred of second behind his team-mate. “Overall there wasn’t much missing to Lewis and Mark, the most important thing is I have a much better feeling for the car today.”
Finally, the tenth position will belong to the former world champion Michael Schumacher who has set a 2,403 second gap on Saturday. Four other drivers came more than two seconds slower, including Renault’s Nick Heidfeld, Force India’s di Resta and Maldonado and Barrichello of Williams. Sauber’s Perez, Toro Rosso’s Alguersuari and Sauber’s Kobayashi, who spent just five laps on the track, were more than three seconds slower than Webber. Heikki Kovalainen of Lotus, Virgin’s Glock and Finnish’s team-mate Chandhok will be the last on the line.
