Romeu fee with FC Barcelona, the 19-year-old being expected to join the West-Londoners immediately. The Spanish midfielder is yet to undergo medical with the Blues, according to the manager Andre Villas Boas who has made the announcement in Thailand where Chelsea are preparing a couple of pre-season friendly games.
Oriol Romeu is now expected to agree the personal terms as Chelsea refused to release any detail regarding the strength of the deal and the material amount. The youngster only made one selections with the Catalans but is no longer part of Pep Guardiola’s near future plans. On the other side, the English champions are at their second transfer, Boas having also signed Genk keeper Thibaut Courtois whom he already loaned to Atletico Madrid.
Oriol is likely to replace Michael Essien who is currently injured, but whose future with the Blues is not uncertain, though. “I don’t want to speak too much about him because he is not our player. It is a part of the squad in which we are struggling with numbers because of Michael Essien’s injury and Oriol is a player with a bright future. He still has to evolve as a player,” said Chelsea’s new manager Boas.
Orioles had previously played for Espanyol and the Barcelona B team and is not set to join new heights with the new side. “The Barcelona B team had a magnificent year in the Spanish second division, they finished third,” he added. The defensive midfielder made his debut with the Spanish champions in a 0-0 draw against Deportivo La Coruna this past season but the lack of confirmation led to Guardiola’s decision to put him on the departing list.
Chelsea have also extended two deals with a couple of more youngsters including Josh McEachran and Ryan Bertrand. The first one received a five-year deal with the Blues with whom he has gathered nine appearances but for which he hasn’t scored any goal. McEachran is also a strong intelligent midfielder who has proved to be a key piece in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans. The Italian manager used the 18-year-old pretty often in both domestic and European competitions where the youngster succeeded to confirm.
As for Betrand, the 21-year-old who spent much of the time on loans to inferior leagues, is now likely to be part of Boas’s big plans as the left defender signed a four-year extension with his current club, but he will have to work very hard to make Ashley Cole fight for his place. Boas has also given Didier Drogba a one-year extension something which propels the Ivorian striker though his eighth season with the Blues with whom he has had the best performances of career.
According to reports, Chelsea are also interested in signing expensive Neymar of Santos for whom the Brazilians ask more than $60 million. Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Manchester City are also vying for the youngster who has impressed since his first day at Santos whom he helped to win this term’s Copa Libertadores.
Unfortunately, the player who is under contract with Santos until 2014, is likely to stay at least six more moths with his current side with which he wants to celebrate the centenary next year. Real Madrid is top of Neymar’s wishlist, according to player’s agent Wanger Ribeiro who declared earlier this week that he fights hard for a one-year extension with the Brazilians.
Chelsea haven’t made any big name transfer so far this window and aren’t likely to do any, although it had been rumored that Falcao and Hulk, both FC Porto players, would join their former coach at Chelsea. But the first one just signed an extension with the European champions, while Hulk is also set to stay in Portugal.
As for Barcelona, they lost their second future promising player after Bojan Krkic departed from the Camp Nou to join his former youth coach Luis Enrique at AS Roma. Instead, the Catalans brought Udinese’s revelation Alexis Sanchez on a 26 million euro fee. The striker, who has become the first Chilean to join the Spanish champions, received a five-year deal which thus runs through the 2016 season.
Chelsea are currently in Bangkok for the forthcoming friendly game against Thailand whom they meet on Sunday. Villas Boas has made his debut at Chelsea with a 1-0 win against Portsmouth and continued with a similar one against Malaysia All-Stars. The Blues will start the new Premier League season away against Stoke City.
