After 50 years of analyses and research, scientists have come to the conclusion that what influences our personalities the most is out body weight.
The study seems to be suggesting that people with personality traits such as conscientiousness and neuroticism are more prone to go through some cycles of losing and gaining weight throughout their whole life. Furthermore, it seems that impulsivity is the worst when it comes to who is going to be overweight and who is not. According to the researchers, the participants who score in the top 10 percent of impulsivity had about 22 lbs. more than people who scored the less in the impulsivity chart.
From what Angelina R. Sutin, Ph.D., lead research in the study, said, it seems that people who are impulsive, lack self-restraint and discipline and it is hard for them to stay on track with things. “To maintain a healthy weight, it is typically necessary to have a healthy diet and a sustained program of physical activity, both of which require commitment and restraint. Such control may be difficult for highly impulsive individuals.”
According to the experts, this is the first large study to examine how personality traits are influenced by body weight. The data was collected from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging, an ongoing study which deals with normal aging. The analyzed subjects were healthy, educated people – 71 percent were white, 22 percent black, 7 percent other ethnicity and 50 percent of them all were women. They were all tested for the 5 most common personality traits – neuroticism, openness, agreeableness, conscientiousness and extraversion – but also for their subcategory traits. Over time, the subjects were also measured and weighted, in order to see how they changed.
Although the researchers found out that throughout time, all people have a tendency to gain weight, there are some personality traits which can predict that some people will be heavier than others. Among them are those who are cynical, competitive and aggressive. Furthermore, those people who are more impulsive also tend to be overweight, due to the fact that they turn to binge eating and alcohol consumption. According to the researchers, they hope that with this study they could come closer to making some better treatments to combat obesity, especially in the United States of America, where things have gone out of control in the past couple of years. According to one of the authors of the study, these things are very complex and the link between body weight and personality traits need to be analyzed more, because there are also some psychological mechanisms under there and they must found out what they are.
