Nurburg. The German came quickest in the last free practice with a one minute and 30,916 second time, being followed by the second practice winner and team-mate Mark Webber.
Red Bull have now become – as expected – the main candidates for the pole position on Saturday afternoon. Webber was just 0,133 seconds slower than the German who is eyeing his seventh title of the season a home in Germany, while Fernando Alonso who is chasing his second straight title of the season, came third with a 0,222 second gap. The Spaniard was the fastest in the first free practice, but is expected to make a better job in the qualifying.
Winner of the Chinese Grand Prix Lewis Hamilton was the fourth quickest on Saturday morning, setting a 0,662 second gap against Vettel, being followed by his McLaren team-mate and Canadian GP winner Jenson Button who was just 0,045 seconds slower than Hamilton. Mercedes failed to shine in Germany after Nico Rosberg finished sixth the third practice with a 0,778 second gap and former world champion Michael Schumacher was 1,607 seconds slower than Vettel.
Felipe Massa went worse in the third training session as the Brazilian set a 1,228 second gap, being followed by Force India’s Adrian Sutil who did a better job than in the previous round, coming 1,475 seconds behind the leader. Williams’ Maldonado, Vitraly Petrov of Renault and Force India’s Di Rest came just below two seconds, while Nick Heidfeld was the first to set an over two-second gap.
Rubens Barrichello was 2,263 seconds slower than Vettel, Sauber’s Perez and Kobayashi set a 2,615 and 2,755 second gap, while Toro Rosso grabbed back to back positions as Sebastian Buemi and Alguersuari were the first to set an over three-second gap. Three drivers including Glock, Liuzzi and d’Ambrosio were more than five seconds slower than the leader, while two other including Lotus’s Chandhok and Hispania’s Ricciardo set a 6,043 and 6,638 second gap respectively.
Webber declared in Germany that he is keen to stay at Red Bull for at least one more season despite his poor season. The Aussie is till chasing his first success of the year, his main aim being the leading position in the world standings. Vettel’s team-mate revealed at the same time that he is willing to gun for the German who has all the chances to defend his world champion title for a second straight year.
Vettel is 80 points above the Australian veteran, having grabbed six first places and three second places in 2011. Red Bull still lead the team table, being followed by McLaren and Ferrari.
