As weird as it may sound, it seems that there were some Neanderthals who had sex with humans about 50,000 years ago.
According to a group of researchers, it seems that there are some modern people who carry around a fragment of Neanderthal DNA on one of their sex chromosomes. According to their theory, Neanderthals and humans interbred sometime after people migrated out of Africa between 50,000 and 80,000 years ago and according to them, this particular DNA fragment can be found on the human X chromosome, which is present in about 9 percent of the people all across the world, except for Africa – there no trace of the DNA fragment was found in people. “It’s in the Middle East, it’s in Europe, it’s in Eurasia, it’s in America, it’s in Australia,” said study researcher, Damian Labuda of the University of Montreal. He went on saying that the event which lead to this transfer must have happened early after the modern man left Africa.
In the world of science, it is widely known that Neanderthals and humans coexisted for a long period of time, but researchers want to provide evidence that the two groups also interbred. Labuda first started going through this thing about 10 years ago, when he discovered that the there was a piece of DNA fragment in the X chromosome in all people, except in Africans. And that’s how his journey started. Another group of researchers discovered a DNA sample from a Neanderthal somewhere in Croatia and with the help of that particular DNA fragment, Labuda could get more information related to what he was looking for – to demonstrate that Neanderthals interbred with humans.
According to Labuda, the next thing he is interested in finding out is whether this particular combination had something to do with the way in which early humans survived and throve. He is also interested in where these fragments can be found and what their role is. He is also wondering whether other fragments accomplish some sort of function or if they are neutral, as the ones he found. Anyway, what is for sure is that somewhere between 50,000 and 80,000 years ago, a Neanderthal feel in love with a human and they decided to have sex. The outcome? Thousands of years later, scientists identify a Neanderthal DNA fragment which is found in 9 percent of the population of the Earth.
