Vettel was in the spotlight throughout the entire third free practice at the Hungaroring as the German came quickest in the last session with a one minute and 21,168 second time.
Vettel spent 17 laps on the track and was followed by Fernando Alonso who had followed another second best time set in the second practice. The former world champion was 0,301 seconds slower than his Red Bull rival, being followed by Jenson Button who set a 0,471 second gap against the German. Vettel team-mate Mark Webber, who set the pole at last week’s German Grand Prix, came fourth faster on Saturday morning with a 0,447 second gap.
Felipe Massa, who is still chasing his first podium place, came fifth with a 0,834 second gap, while Nico Rosbger put Mercedes sixth after a 1,366 second delay. The biggest surprise of the practice came from this year’s Chinese and German champion Lewis Hamilton, who came seventh, 1,499 seconds slower than Vettel, though he had impressed in both previous practices with two fastest times.
Michael Schumacher, who hasn’t grabbed any pole so far this season, came eighth with a 1,869 second gap, being followed by Vitaly Petrov, who had had a poor second free practice, with a 2,007 second gap. Force India Paulo di Resta was 2,108 seconds slower than Vettel, while Nick Heidfeld of Renault was just 0,005 seconds slower than him.
Sauber picked back to back times as Kamui Kobayashi came 0,250 seconds slower than his team-mate Sergio Perez, and 2,207 than the German. The two were just given extensions to their original contracts with Sauber for which they will drive for yet another year. Williams also captured back to back positions as Rubens Barrichello, who is still looking for his ld shape, came 2,495 seconds slower than Vettel and Paldonado 2,726 behind the leader.
Adrian Sutil did a worse job than in the previous practice, coming nearly three seconds behind Vettel, being followed by Toro Rosso’s Alguersuari and Sebastian Buemi. Lotus’ Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen came nearly four seconds behind the fastest, while Virgin’s d’Ambrosio and Ricciardo were five seconds slower. Finally, Timo Glock of Virgin and Hispania’s Liuzzi came just over six seconds behind the German.
Sauber rewarded their drivers Perez and Kobayashi with a new extension earlier this week which run through the 2012 season. “From the outset, we had already signed a contract with Sergio that went beyond 2011. With a rookie that always entails a certain risk, of course, but clearly it has paid off. Kamui has grown into his role extremely well this year. Though it is only his second full Formula One season, he is already taking on the responsibilities that naturally fall to the more experienced driver in the team,” said Peter Sauber, team’s boss.
Unfortunately neither the Mexican, nor the Japanese has impressed too much this season. Kobayashi is 11th in the standings with 33 points, just one behind Michael Schumacher, while Perez is 15h with eight points, well behind the leader Vettel who has earned 266 points this year.
