Peer had an impressive first serve percentage of 74, winning at the same time 59 percent of service points and 56 percent on return. On the other side, Brianti could only win three games, but never stay in touch with the win. Peer, who had previously defeated Alla Kudryavtseva is now two wins from her first season title. The Israeli will next play Tamira Paszek in what will be their second ever meeting. The Austrian, who is chasing her third career title in United States, needed three hours and 40 minutes to get rid of the Canadian who – despite a great start – conceded the last two sets at the death.
The two players exchanged nine aces and 18 breaks, eight apiece, with Paszek providing a much more consistent tennis, especially in the second set. Also, both players had a 62 first serve percent, but it was the Austrian to win 51 percent of service points, compared to her opponent who had a 48 one. “I’ll use some ice packs and I’m going to have some treatment, a massage to cool down and relax and then have some dinner afterwards,” said Paszek after the game.
“I’ll try to calm down and have an early night, which is pretty tough already, but I’m used to that. Regardless, being in the semifinals here in Washington is an amazing feeling. I’m really happy and I’m really looking forward to it,” she added. The head to head series between Peer and Tamira is led 1-0 by Israeli who last defeated the world number 42 at the 2007 Fed Cup.
Concerning the second half of the draw, second favorite Nadia Petrova struggled to beat Bojana Jovanovski in two sets, beating the Serb 7-6, 7-5 after two hours. Despite an impressive first serve percentage of 79, Bojana failed to win any set, conceding four services and converting just three of seven chances.
The Russian won 61 percent of service points, hit eight aces and committed three double faults, compared to her opponent who had five double faults and won just 53 percent of service points. Next up for Petrova is Irina Falconi who follows a 6-4, 6-3 win against Virginie Razzano.
