A poor start cost Washington a sixth straight loss when they were defeated by New York Mets 5-8 on Friday night at the Nationals Park where the visitors scored their first six points in a row, four of which within the first term.
Reyes brought the first minimal lead for the visitors after Murphy singled to left in the first inning. Turned doubled the lead right afterwards, following Pana’s singling to left, with Murphy getting to third and Wright to second. Bay then grounded out to shortstop, while Murphy made it 3-0 with Wright getting to third and Pagan to second. Finally, the early rally was ended by Wright who scored his first one after Duda’s sacrifice to left.
The next two innings went scoreless for both sides, while the fourth one saw the same Mets extend their lead to six points. Gee singled to center, allowing Duda to score the fifth one, with Paulino getting to third. Finally, Reyes hit a sacrifice fly to left as Paulino scored the last point of the run. Nationals’ first reply came in the same fourth term through Zimmerman who cut the deficit to five points, and Morse who scored the second one right afterwards also thanks to a throwing error committed by Reyes.
Washington went even three points behind the away side when Ankiel hit a sacrifice fly to left for Ramos’s third point. But that could only arouse Mets’ two point short run set in the sixth inning. Paulino doubled to center as Bay brought back the four point lead, while Reyes doubled to center for Paulino’s eighth one.
The seventh round went clean, while the eight one saw Washington struggle for a comeback. Ramos singled to center, allowing Nix to make it 4-8, while Hairston Jr. cut the deficit to three points after Ankiel singled to center, but it was too late as the Mets were celebrating their 33rd win on the road.
Said manager Terry Collins: “Our guys have realized that nobody in this league is going to feel sorry for you just because you lost Carlos Beltran. They got to go play and not worry about stuff we can’t control, trades and everything else. These guys have decided they’ve got things to prove and they’ve done a great job.”
