Umag final after rallying past Fabio Fognini in straight similar sets, 6-2, 6-2 to near his first title of the season. Next up for the Croatian is either former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero or second seed Alexandr Dolgopolov.
Cilic broke through in nearly one hour, stealing five breaks from the Italian who could only break his opponent once. The crowd favorite finished the game with a 58 first serve percentage, two aces and a 56 return percentage, winning at the same time 66 percent of service points, compared to the sixth favorite who committed eight double faults, had a 51 first serve percentage and who won just 44 percent of service points and 34 percent on return.
Next up for Cilic is the winner between second favorite Alexandr Dolgopolov and former world number one Juan Carlo Ferrero. “Yesterday was a different match than today’s. I knew what to expect from Seppi so it was easier for me to approach this match. It was more about how I was going to play. I was hitting the ball very well and found a good balance in my game between hitting my own shots and playing defence. Hopefully I can continue that in my next match.”
Cilic had previously beaten Robuin Haase 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the second term, and Andreas Seppi, a world number 44 who had conceded an easy win to the Croatian. Ferrero has grabbed his first straight set win of the week when the Spanaird beat Carlos Berlocq 6-1, 7-6. Winner of this term’s Stuttgart event, Ferrero broke his opponent seven times and won 64 percent of return points, finishing the game with a 72 first serve percentage, including a 51 one on service points.
On the other side, Berlocq came up with a 66 first serve percentage, two double faults and a 49 return percentage, winning at the same time just 36 percent of service points, something which cost him a lot, especially in the first set, which the Spaniard won in nearly half an hour. Previous to the quarter finals, Ferrero had ousted Ivan Ljubicic 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second term and Maximo Gonzalez in the opening day.
His next opponent Dolgopolov, who has not won any title so far this season, has also made a straight set progress after defeating Albert Ramos 6-3, 7-5. Despite a very poor first serve percentage of 40, the Ukraine player eliminated the Spaniard thanks to three breaks and a much better 41 return percentage. Ramos could only steal one break, finishing the game with an impressive though meaningless 70 first serve percentage, three double faults and a 31 return percentage.
The two also exchanged seven aces, five of which being hit by the Ukrainian who met the Spaniard for the first time this year. Dolgopolov will meet Ferrero for the first time, the head to head series being led by the 31-year-old veteran who first defeated the world number 26 at the same Umag event last year. Ferrero is also chasing his 17th career singled title in Croatia, second of the season.
