Los Angeles quarter finals to set a first meeting with world number 64 and host Alex Bogomolov Jr. On the first half of the draw, Mardy Fish has set an all American semi final with Ryan Harrison.
Gulbis thundered eight aces past the Argentine, winner of two titles this season in Delray Beach and Estoril, winning at the same time 69 percent of service points as well as four of six break point opportunities. The Latvian needed nearly one hour and a half to stun the former US Open champion whom he only conceded one service in the second set.
As for Delpo, the second seed finished the game with a 57 first serve percentage, a poor 31 one on return and three double faults, winning at the same time 50 percent on service points, insufficient though for a win against the stubborn Gulbis who is now in front of one of his best season performances. Gulbis had previously ousted another seed, Xavier Mallise, whom the Latvian defeated in the opening day. In the second round he had eliminated Daniel Kosawoski, 6-2, 6-4.
His next opponent Bogomolov overcame Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil after surviving a big early scare, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1. The American managed to come from behind though as he won his five breaks in the last two sets, three of which in the second set. Bellucci had a tremendous start, breaking his opponent twice, but was unable to set the pace in the next two sets, conceding the victory after more than two hours.
