The scandal continues in Ireland over the way the Roman Catholic Church is handling the inquiries into the child abuses made by Catholic priests with a statement of the Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny, who said the Vatican’s approach was a disgrace.
The PM made his statement after the issuance of the report on how the Catholic Church reacted to accusations that child abuses were committed in the diocese of Cloyne, adding that news laws would not be blocked by the Roman Catholic canon law.
The PM referred to the laws that are to be introduced in order to make possible disclosure in case of child abuse. “The law of the land should not be stopped by a collar or a croizer,” Enda Kenny said.
By this new law, withholding information about a child sexual abuse will be considered a crime and will be prosecuted accordingly.
The Minister for Children is to announce a statutory child protection code, and other measures.
Deputy PM and the Minister for Foreign Relations met with the papal nuncio, Giuseppe Leanza, and discussed over the findings of the report.
Deputy PM and the Minister for Foreign Relations met with the papal nuncio, Giuseppe Leanza, and discussed over the findings of the report.
Leanza considered that the meeting was very fruitful, that he received a copy of the report, which he is sure to forward to the Holy See. Pope’s envoy also expressed sorrow that the children’s safety cannot be assured within the Irish Catholic church.
Irish authorities expressed their anger at what they deemed as an intervention of Vatican in Irish internal affairs by telling the priests to undermine Irish rule and to refuse to report child sexual abuses committed by priests to the Irish authorities.
The Vatican’s order was labeled as “absolutely unacceptable,” and “inappropriate.” The Deputy PM said he wanted to know how this state, with which Ireland had close ties, issued a communication by which the priests were sworn to silence about such a serious matter.
Fianna Fail leader Michael Martin alluded today to the fact that Bishop John Magee should even serve time in jail if he is prosecuted as a result of the investigations into the Cloyne situation.
John Magee, Bishop of Cloyne, was accused that for 12 years has been misleading the minister of children by saying that the guidelines of the Church for handling children was strictly observed and that he told the Health Service Executive he had reported to the police all cases of abuse against children.
